TORONTO - The company that makes Hydroxycut dietary supplements is voluntarily recalling 11 of its products from store shelves in Canada following a warning about the products south of the border, Health Canada says.
The 11 products, and an additional three not sold in Canada, were the subject of a public warning in the United States late last week after reports linking some of them to cases of serious liver damage and at least one death.
"Consumers who are concerned about symptoms possibly associated with the use of these products should consult with their health care practitioner," Health Canada spokeswoman Christelle Legault said Monday in an email.
"Health Canada is reviewing the situation in Canada and is currently examining the product formulas, ingredients, dosages, or other causes which may pose a risk to health in relation to the use of Hydroxycut products," the federal department said in the statement.
The Canadian-based company Iovate Health Sciences Inc. is voluntarily recalling the following products in Canada:
-Hydroxycut Regular Rapid Release Caplets
-Hydroxycut Caffeine-Free Rapid Release Caplets
-Hydroxycut Hardcore Liquid Capsules
-Hydroxycut Max Liquid Capsules
-Hydroxycut Regular Drink Packets
-Hydroxycut Caffeine-Free Drink Packets
-Hydroxycut Hardcore Drink Packets (Ignition Stix)
-Hydroxycut Max Drink Packets
-Hydroxycut Liquid Shots
-Hydroxycut Max Aqua Shed Capsules
-Hydroxycut 24 Caplets
An additional three products were mentioned in an advisory from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Friday, but they are not sold in Canada by Iovate: Hydroxycut Carb Control Caplets, Hydroxycut Natural Caplets and Hydroxycut Hardcore RTD (Ready to Drink).
