Runners and strength training

What do you fellow runners do in terms of strength training for you lower body?
Since returning to running some years back, I have always "neglected" my lower half in terms of strength training and considered my weekly training sufficient enough for my lower half. If I do ever focus on my lower half it is either working on the elliptical or doing the plyometrics p90x workout. However, sometimes I feel as though I am missing out by not strength training with the classic leg press, squats, etc. Then again, I don't want to overwork my legs or compromise my training for upcoming races.
Any advice or suggestions from other runners is appreciated!

I work my legs as if I were not a runner. I do squats, lunges deadlifts, etc. I simply schedule my workouts so I have a rest day from running the day after a leg workout and same with my long run.0
