Workout snacks

Okay, so I'm aware that it's basically essential for me to have a snack prior my workout- have something full of carbs for the energy boost...and a snack afterwards for the nutritional factor to help aid recovery, like something high in protein.
So far I've been having a glass of skimmed milk with a banana and a bit of peanut butter as a post workout snack. But the thing is, it's all I ever have, after every single workout, every day. I love that snack, BUT I'd love to be able to have other foods as a post workout snack (I usually workout in the evenings before my dinner).
But then, my main concern is over a snack to have BEFORE my workout to give me the energy and to keep my stomach from rumbling and lurching- which then only distracts me and makes me feel miserable. I've tried toast, and, well the only bread I have is heavy in fibre...so that only ended up in me having an upset stomach.
I'm currently only doing cardio, but will soon incorporate strength training also (I've only been going to the gym for a month so far). And I've heard amazing things on protein bars/protein shakes...and I'm curious about them. I mean, there's so much praise for them out there. But the thing is? When I look at the ingredients list, I'm overwhelmed by the list of things...the additives. Just looking at the label makes me feel unsettled by how processed and artificial they seem.
Any suggestions on what I could have? What are your workout snacks? Opinions on protein shakes and protein bars?
Thank you.

Have you thought of some other pieces of fruit with a couple of nuts maybe?
Or some cut up veggies & Hummus, or yoghurt.
You can also get some wholegrain fruit bread and maybe having a slice of it.
You're welcome to check out my diary for ideas!0
