I LOVE my bikes! I rebuilt a vintage cruiser last summer & I just got an old school Miyata road bike a few weeks ago! I'm sooo happy spring is here so I can ride them! And I'm very excited to strap on my new HRM to see how many calories I burn!

    Happy riding everyone!

I swear over the last few months that I've been on here, I've been meaning to tell you that you get more frickin' adorable all the time. Your AVs have shown such progress and as your booty gets smaller, your smile gets bigger!

I am mildly addicted to biking! Last year I bought an Trek hybrid for rail-trail riding, and last month I bought a Cannondale Synapse road bike. I'm trying to average 100 miles per week, or 2000 miles for the year. Sometimes I wear my HRM on fitness rides and average 700 cals per hour @ 80% HR. Biking has knocked off more fat than any aerobics I did at the gym, and it is never boring!
I see all these people that say they are burning more calories per hour than I am...I keep wondering if my HR monitor is correct. It takes me about 1.5 hrs to burn 700 calories. Are you riding hills? You are close to goal weight, right? So, I don't think it's a matter of weight. I wish there was some way to figure out if my HR monitor is correct.

jtintx, I'm almost 55 years old and very fit for my age. I'm a 5'8" male and weigh 150 lbs, so I don't have to lose weight. I just push myself hard during my rides. I live in a part of PA that has rolling hills and some VERY difficult climbs. For me to achieve 700+ cals per hour, I need to keep my average heart rate at around 150 BPM. Hope this helps!

My HRM says my avg. HR for my rides is about 70-75% MHR. So I feel like I'm working fairly hard. But maybe I'm not going as hard as I should. I'd sure like to get more cal. burn out of the time I spend on the bike...but I don't know that I can go much harder. I think your hill climbing is probably give you the extra burn. What HR monitor do you use?

I use a Reebok Precision XT, with chest strap. Yeah, hill climbing can get my HR up to 180 BPM very quickly. I only maintain that for a minute or two max. How many miles do you do in 1.5 hrs? I ride about 23 miles in 1.5 hrs on a hilly course.

Bamboo- Did you find that you got a lot of flats with your stock tires? I just ordered some tires with Kevlar belts so they are less prone to punctures. I had to fix 3 flats so far inone month!

How do you like the synapse? That's the bike I'm aiming to get when I hit 180! All aluminum with a carbon fiber fork right (I think its the synapse 7)? So so so pretty.

Yeah, I couldn't justify the expense of an all-carbon bike. I really love this bike. It's very light, rolls easily and is WAY faster than my Trek hybrid for the same amount of energy expenditure. I was able to buy it (new) as a 2008 leftover model. Mine is the silver/ blue color scheme.

BTW- yes it is the Synapse 7!

Don't forget about recumbents They're great alternatives to regular bikes. You might not be able to get the speed of a road bike, or do trails, but they're easy, fun, and you burn just as many calories. I have a recumbent tadpole (2 wheels in front, one in back), my husband has 2 tadpoles and a long wheel base 2 wheeler. They are great fun! Just a warning, you should be feeling plenty social when you ride a 3 wheel recumbent...people always want to stop and ask you about it.

We do about 27 miles in 90 minutes but no big hills...maybe a couple of rollers.

Hey thanks for the suggestions on getting the right fit for my bike, weather just warmed up here, so will have to get the bike out, check the seat height, etc. and see if it works, I really do love biking and our kids love it as well, thinking of doing some longer bike rides this summer. I'll let you know.

jtintx, ok, if you rode 27 miles in 90 mins, you averaged 18 MPH, a great speed! Your HRM is not giving you an accuate account of your workout cals. At that rate, you should burn at about 40 cals per mile. That ride should have burned around 1000 cals. Does your HRM have a chest strap or only a watch?

McPushup, you are the man!!! My seat could not take 300 miles in a weekend.

It has a chest strap. It is a Polar F6. The numbers seem low to me but Polar is supposed to be good...so I don't know...

I was hoping to become a biker, but it kills my knees, not sure why, don't remember ever having an injury, maybe I have the wrong bike I don't know, I can ride recreational with my kids but thats it, so I'm going to take up jogging instead, so far so good. I would love to run a 5k, someday.

I agree with Leann, if your knees are strong enough to run, you shouldn't have a problem with a properly fitting bike. Take your bike to a bike shop and ask them to adjust the bike to fit you. It will make a huge difference.
