I'm definitely missing some cultural references. Anyone want to explain the pink unicorns and the term "broscience" to an English girl?

"broscience" from my understanding is science or advice that would never work
Like hooking up a solar panel to a lightbulb to turn on the lightbulb, but using that lightbulb as a light source for the solar panel.
Never ending energyyyy

"A sarcastic term implying that the time tested, muscle building wealth of knowledge developed and utilized by successful, experienced bodybuilders is inferior to the continually shifting hypotheses of articulate, textbook-savvy 155lb. chemists with little or no real world first-person experience to substantiate their conclusions. The term "Broscience" is oft repeated on bodybuilding and fitness oriented internet forums in an attempt to demonstrate online dominance as a substitution for success in the arena of actual bodybuilding."0

Broscience - it's a term of derision people use for fitness trends that have been dis-proven, but still hang around, esp. in the body building circles.
I'm not sure on the pink unicorn. I've just been seeing that pop up myself.0 -
I work in an uniform shop for public safety, as a result, a lot of the guys lift etc. They know I'm on a fitness thing and so I get lots of differing advice and tips. Like seriously weird shizz sometimes. Is this broscience? Even though I'm not a bro:laugh:
I look like one most days though ha0 -
Pink unicorn thingys such as my icon or something else?0

I thought the Pink Unicorn thing was the same idea as the Flying Spaghetti Monster? A parody of god(s) used by some non-religious/agostics/atheists. You can prove they exist as much as you prove God(s) exist etc
*edit* I'm thinking of the Invisible Pink Unicorn - maybe it's not the same thing as an ordinary Pink Unicorn0 -
My whiddle poniessss!!!!!!0

Just the term Broscience gives me the giggles.0

Did someone say broscience and pink ponies?

This is the best way to describe broscience.

Unicorns pee glitter.
sounds painful0 -
Broscience is Word of mouth knowledge passed off as fact, primarily among bodybuilders + weightlifters. Generally spouted most by guys who have used loads of steroids and are huge, have no idea what is happening to their bodies and then share that same cluelessness with others who make the false assumption that their experience means that they have knowledge.
I am thinking that maybe the unicorn thing may be similar to the Brony thing which refers to adult males who are fans of my little pony. ??0 -
Are you talking about My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic?0

I think bro science refers to word-of-mouth anecdotal history to support dubious and non-peer reviewed theories.
Don't know about the unicorns, but I would surmise that it references the fact that unicorns don't exist. They don't, do they?0 -

That's kind of offensive actually, some of those guys that use steroids/pro hormones that are huge know more than most could hope to know about the bodies. Way too much of a generalization going on there.0 -

"Belief" in the Invisible Pink Unicorn (Bless Her Holy Hooves) and the Flying Spaghetti Monster (Ramen) are parodies of belief in God. The Church of the FSM was started when schools in Kansas were instructed to teach creationism in science lessons. You can read Bobby Henderson's Open Letter to the Kansas School Board here - http://www.venganza.org/about/open-letter/
In it he argues that his belief that the FSM exists is as well documented as anyone's belief in the theory that God literally created the world in six days and then rested on the seventh, and that the existence of the FSM should be given equal time and emphasis to creationism.
More about the Invisible Pink Unicorn here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invisible_Pink_Unicorn (how can it be both pink and invisible? That's not for us mere humans to know or understand)
An earlier version is "Bertrand Russell's teapot" - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russell's_teapot
"Russell wrote that if he claimed that a teapot were orbiting the Sun somewhere in space between the Earth and Mars, it would be nonsensical for him to expect others not to doubt him on the grounds that they could not prove him wrong. Russell's teapot is still referred to in discussions concerning the existence of God."
"
the point of Russell's teapot is that no one can prove a negative"
So mentioning the Invisible Pink Unicorn, or the Flying Spaghetti Monster brings a note of scepticism to someone's claims.0 -

Are you speaking that way in order to imitate said meat-head or are you intimating that my initial question was stupid. Hmmm?0 -

Bronies are fans of the show My Little Pony: Friendship is magic, that are older than the target demographic for the show. Mostly refers to the male fans, hence the "Bro" in "Bronies".0
