Snacks on the Go

I work crazy hours and do not have access to a fridge or freezer during the day. I get lunch, but I am looking for a snack during the day - one in the morning and on in the afternoon.

At the snack counter at the hospital is string cheese, granola bars, and smoothies. But these do not seem like great snacks...

Any ideas? Anything I can carry in my lab coat.

I like to snack on fruit-bananas and cuties are great and don't need to be in the fridge. You can also try nuts-almonds, pistachios, cashews are my fav.

I love Larabars. They come in ton of flavors, all natural ingredients and give you a fruit/nut combo that is amazing.

Nuts are a great idea & for a little sweet- I personally like the cocoa roasted almonds- just a touch of chocolate flavor and still great on calories. I was also thinking raisins...maybe baby carrots but I prefer mine cold. Maybe granola bars don't sound that great but probably better than other options. I will eat a fiber one bar or fiber one brownie. Low in cals and adds some needed fiber. I'd also say a nice apple if you like them room temp- not sure how that would look in your lab pocket though- ha ha!
  • I think I would probably make up some homemade granola and put a serving in a baggie with some of your favorite nuts & dried fruits.
If you are having a chocolate craving one day, you can put some semi-sweet chocolate chips in your trailmix for a twist.

I am making up homemade granola today as a matter of fact!

Here is the one I am making today: http://www.thekitchykitchen.blogspot.com/ ( go to Recipes and then Breakfast and scroll down to see the pic and recipe )

You could take a small insulated cooler with you to work ( pack it each AM ) with carrots & celery, trail mix, a cup of yogurt, and some fresh fruit like bananas, oranges, apples to snack on between meals when you are doing paperwork etc.

Hope this gives you some ideas.

I always pack an extra apple with my lunch for an afternoon snack-- I keep it in an insulated lunch box, so it's still cool even by the afternoon. I love Frigo light string cheese-- only 60 calories for 8 grams of protein! Nuts are my new go-to snack as well. I'll either get the 100 calorie packs from Emerald or measure out a serving and just have it in a ziploc baggie in my purse. I agree with the person who said the cocoa roasted almonds are good-- it gives you a little taste of sweet. The Sweet and Salty Cinnamon mix from Emerald is good too! Hope those are some doable ideas!

Oooh LaraBars ... now that is one that I have not thought of. I would feel better about that than a granola bar. Where do you buy these?

In Theory that would be ok -- we actually have a fridge in the office but because its literally on the other end of the hospital I only go there in the morning and when I leave work. Anything I want to eat has to either be from the snack shop, or carried in my pocket!

I love freeze dried fruit (Archer Farms at Target has good ones) and any 100 Calorie Pack nuts...so good.

Good idea - might look odd in my labcoat all day though.
