Fellow Philly fans…we catch a bad rap amongst the various sports communities out there. Why? Let’s see…back in the late 60’s fans pelted a guy dressed like Santa with snowballs; the JD Drew battery incident; the jail in the bowels of the Vet; we boo even our greatest champions…and I’m sure the list goes on.
However, we are NOT the only fans out there with issues. Take the Astros fan who ripped a foul ball out of a little girl’s hands and proudly showed her trophy to her friends (who then had the cojones to CHEER for her). Or how about when NY Giants fans threw hundreds of snowballs and chunks of ice at Chargers players and team officials, injuring fifteen people; Chargers equipment manager Sid Brooks was knocked unconscious. Or, when Dodger fans, pissed off by lousy umpiring, throwing the free souvenir baseballs they got on game day onto the field. And let’s not forget our pals in Cleveland…Knowing that they would lose their team to Baltimore for the next year, fans of the Cleveland Browns, especially those in the Dawg Pound area of Cleveland Municipal Stadium, were so hostile during the team's final home game against the Cincinnati Bengals that game play coming toward the Dawg Pound had to be directed towards the opposite end of the stadium. There was extensive damage to the stadium, as empty seats were torn and thrown onto the field, fires were set in the bleachers, sinks and stalls were torn from the bathrooms, and stadium security were also attacked.
And those are just a handful of incidents NOT involving Philly in any way, shape or form. All fans are passionate about their teams; some more so than others (have you seen the denizens of the “Black Hole” in Oakland??). We all bleed our various team colors during the different seasons. And not ONE sports fan out there can honestly say that they’ve never “booed” their own team at some point in time. Yet, TRUE fans remain loyal to our beloved home teams, despite the ups & downs (I’m talking to you Cubs fans…props to you for staying true to your Cubbies).
Now in regards to Philly fans, specifically…I ask you, sports fans: Hath not a Philly fan eyes? Hath not a Philly fan hands, organs, dimensions, senses, affections, passions; fed with the same food, hurt with the same weapons, subject to the same diseases, healed by the same means, warmed and cooled by the same winter and summer as other fans are? If you prick us, do we not bleed? If you tickle us, do we not laugh? If you poison us, do we not die?
Philly fans are not the Boogiemen we are made out to be…we are just passionate people who love our sports and have suffered through mediocrity and “oh so close” for many moons (not as many as some…again back to you Cubbies fans), with the exception of the World Series our Phightins brought home a few years back.
That is my rant…forgive the length; but I felt the need to defend myself and my fellow Philly fans across the globe. Let’s go Flyers, Phillies, Eagles and Sixers!!!!!!!!!

Even those "mellow" people on the West Coast have no room to talk - a fan at a Dodger game was hospitalized and, a fan at a Charger game was killed.
Philly fans get the bad rap, but we're certainly not the only fan base with issues.
I would also add, that, aside from a few moronic fans, we're just passionate. We hate players that get paid a lot of money but don't put in, or appear to put in, the effort. Witness Ricky "running" Watters. When asked about alligator arming a pass over the middle his famous quote "For who, for what?" Uhm, for the fans that pay a lot of money to watch you play, *kitten*. There have been players that have been mediocre, but give it all every time they hit the field/rink/court that Philly fans love.0 -
Oh, and I live in CA so we have to deal with Raider fans and Giants fans....ugh0

I sit and watch the playoffs
Knowing Flyers are all jag-offs

Love the post!! I love hearing stories from my cousin who lives in Baltimore- those Orioles fans just sit and stare at the screen! Meanwhile she is yelling her head off about something. Hellooo people!!! call your team on bad play!!! I will not just sit there passively. Also I agree it is a bit of the frustration to see teams go so far, and then get eliminated out of the post-season for some lame reason or less than their "A" game, year after year after year. Thanks for the Phils though. I don't worry about them at all now
It was actually stress lifted after they won. Phinally!!
