I just shoveled about a foot of snow for an hour. I know that it has to count towards my exercise for the day but am unsure of how to classify it.

Any suggestions or knowledge of the calories burned per minute?

Or would this be considered "strength training" in lieu of cardio?

Snow shoveling is definitely cardio! I just found this calculator. I don't know its accuracy, but you can search for your activity and enter your weight and it'll tell you how much you burned.

  • Those sites were great! Did you see some of those activities? They're hilarious! Oh well, I'm gonna go harvest some wild rice from a canoe now....

That's funny! I was just thinking of laying some crushed rock while mambo dancing.

  • Wait, I've got it... We could EAT the wild rice WHILE mambo dancing ON the crushed rock!

I am in the Chicagoland area. The amount of snow was about a foot but fortunately it was not compacted or heavy snow. I imagine I will be feeling it in my arms tomorrow. Though I am not a snow person per se, my walking buddy plows snow for a living so he could not walk with me this morning, but we both got a work out today.

I am supposed to go walking with him tomorrow but think it may not be a good idea as all of the forest preserve trails must be loaded with snow as well. Wish I had waterproof boots!
  • What a great web-site! Thanks for the tip-Chris.
