taking measurements

Ok, I'll admit I'm baffled by taking measurements and need some help.:blushing:

When I began last week I took my measurements, but what am I supposed to measure? I measured my neck,arms, chest, waist hips and thighs. I constantly hear people saying how many inches they've lost. Is there a standard for figuring that out or do I just total up the inches lost between all the areas I'm tracking?

I hope my confusion isn't ludicrous but I've truly never kept track before.
