I posted something yesterday about this and people were asking my bmr and i wasnt sure what that stood for yet as I am very new. I figured out yesterday that my BMR is 1,658 but this wasnt asking about my job, ex sedintary, active, etc. I have a desk job so I take this x 1.2 if I remember correctly which is 1989 but then what? Sorry but im just confused about how to determine what i need in order to lose. I want to lose 1.5 to 2 lbs per week

A pound is = 3,500 calories. 1 pound per week = a 500 calorie deficit each day ( 7 x 500= 3,500). A 1,000 calorie a day deficit for 2 pounds.
Remember unless you are very petite, 1200 is your minimum NET calories. As you get closer to your goal, 1/2 pound loss per week is more likely.
Net calories = calories in (eaten) VS. calories out (exercise)0 -
Firstly, let's deal in approximates here. Your calculation of 1989 (let's call it 2000) is the calories you would need to survive and do your normal level of work.
1200 is a bare minimum of caloire intake. So if you intake somewhere between 1200 and 2000 you shoudl lose weight.
1 lb a week, or 3500 calories, is 500 calories a day, so apply that deficit to your usual requirements and you'd get 2000-500=1500 per day.
2 lb a week means a deficit of 1000 per day....but if you take that off 2000 you get below the floor level of 1200. So that's too big of a deficit.
I'd try for a week or so on 1500 (approx!) per day, and see how you get on.0 -
Just let the system figure it out for you here: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/account/change_goals_guided
Enter your present weight, height, gender, birthday, activity level and desired loss per week. It'll do all the math for you!0 -
Go to the MFP and set your goals to lose 1.5-2 pounds a week. Based on your height and current weight it will give you the information you are asking for, don't reinvent the wheel! The website is set up to figure it all out for you.0

Or if you want to do the math yourself . . . .
BMR = 1658, means that you burn up 1658 calories per day just breath and keeping your body warm.
TDEE = 1658 * 1.2 = 1989, means that you burn up 1989 calories breathing, keeping your body warm plus your normal daily activities like getting out of bed and walking to your sedentary job.
For a loss of 1.5 pounds per week, you need to eat 750 calories a day less than your TDEE of 1989. 1989-750 = 1239.
For a loss of 2 pounds per week, you would need to eat 1000 calories a day less than your TDEE of 1989. 1989 - 1000 = 989. But women should never eat less than 1200 a day since you'd be eating so little that you'd be missing out on vital nutrients. So even if you told the system you wanted to lose 2 pounds a week, it would tell you your net goal is 1200, hardly less than if you tell it your goal is 1.5 pounds per week.0 -
