I was working 3 jobs and had to take care of my 4 yr old. I would stay up until 2am trying to finish what chores/studies I could do. It was very stressful. Recently I started doing 20 minutes yoga stretches right before I hit the bed. You can also look at sleep calculator, sleepyty.me, to try to adjust your bedtime.

Yup, divorce solved a lot of my sleep problems too!

Melatonin is my life saver. 3 mg half an hour before I want to sleep and I'm good. Sometimes if I wake up in the middle of the night I take another one.

I keep paper and pen near my bed. I used to wake up thinking of something I needed to do and then I couldn't get back to sleep because I was afraid I'd forget to do it. Now I can just write it down and go back to sleep because I know I can't forget it now.

Watch caffeine. It really depends on the person how much and when affects sleep. My husband has found his cutoff is about 4. He tries to quit by 3 and that has helped his sleep some.

Oddly enough, for me, TV and Computer don't seem to affect me. In fact, I watch tv on my computer right before bed. I watch something that isn't too serious. Something I can enjoy and not think too deeply about. If I ready, I try to read something light as opposed to one of my textbooks.

I try to exercise everyday but not too close to bed time. Exercise perks me up.

I have a routine before bed of brushing teeth etc and I do that every night.

I try to go to bed about the same time every night, even weekends.

I try to keep the rest of my life in order so I don't feel I've left stuff undone. I know this is impossible so now I've learned to just let stuff go. I can always vacuum tomorrow!

Make sure your health is good. I had abnormal sleep needs and it turned out I was anemic. Thyroid makes you tired too. But, it sounds like you simply don't get enough sleep and need to find a way to go to bed earlier.

My dear friend is anemic and is tiered all the time.
Also, we had a sleep specialist come in and talk with us at the college I attend here is some useful information:

Don't drink anything with caffeine in it after 6pm that means soda (pop)
Your circadian rhythm is off? Go to bed at the same time everyday (weekends too) and get up the same time
Take melatonin to help you fall asleep until your on a routine (can't over use it)
When getting ready to sleep turn off all electronics, possibly dim the lights, don't watch T.V.
