Beginners make the most progress with low rep, full body routines done 3x per week. Working a body part once per week is pretty much only effective for steroid users.

You should be squatting "below parallel," which is defined as an imaginary line from your knee to your hip joint. If you're not going low enough, you may need to lower the weight, or it may be an issue of hamstring flexibility.

    Parallel:

LIfting full body 3x week hits the full body 3x each week.
Doing splits where you lift 4 or 5 days a week will likely hit the full body 2x week.
Assuming you are eating/resting appropriately, 3x is better than 2x.

As for the squats, I was in the same situation a couple of weeks ago. I dropped my weight a bit and am now getting much deeper in my squats. From personal observation, I was still seeing the benefit of a relatively "shallow" squat, but the deeper you can go the better.

Agreed! I to just recently changed up my squats and going deeper even if I had to drop the weight a bit and already seeing the benefits :)
