This was posted on Alan Aragon's wall recently, in response to a recent harvard study that attempts to correlate meat consumption with death.

Not written by Alan, but he does have a few comments in the article.

Most notably (this is a great quote):
“This whole idea of pointing the finger at a single dietary culprit in the development of a multifactorial outcome is hilariously preposterous,” adds Aragon. “Epidemiological data is observational and thus uncontrolled. It’s hypothesis-generating, and is incapable of demonstrating causation. There is no direct evidence that red meat is a special agent of disease.”

    I like the conclusions, which pretty much agree to how I see meat:

    "The bottom line:
    As always, what you eat is up to you. The argument isn’t about whether you should or shouldn’t eat meat–it’s about whether red meat is inherently dangerous. As a practical way to ensure your health, mix select lean cuts of red meat with fattier options if you are trying to prevent overeating (because fatty cuts are very caloric). Stay active, eat fruits and vegetables, consume protein from a variety of sources, sleep more, and enjoy your meat without guilt."

    Thank you for posting this. My vegetarian friends were all "See we told you." Read the study before you use it. Please choose your diet based on your dietary and ethical needs and not untested science.

    Yes -- BUT, you would have to be living in a cave if this were the first time you had heard of concerns about red meat in our diets. Yes, one study is not compelling -- but this is the latest of hundreds (some better, some worse.) Try looking for studies that say more read meat is better for you.

    Not many things better in life than a big steak, but unfortunately I do not digest it so it so the 20 minutes of pleasure I get from eating it is not worth the 15 days of misery associated with the bloat and constipation. I also dropped 60 bad cholesterol points by cutting red meat out of my diet.

    So you guys can read all the studies you want, I know what does, and what does not work for me.

    But in saying that, if you can enjoy red meat, with out it having a negative effect on your life, GOOD FOR YOU!

    Why do you need another bad study? Read some history. The celts were using cattle as standard commerce during the time of the roman empire. Did the celts get conquered by Rome? Nope. During the crusades, the church tried to make the knights of the temple of Solomon vegetarians. As a result they were too weak to fight and so they were allowed by the church to hunt again. Obviously you don't need to be strong if all you do is loiter at the mall and talk about what stupid celebrity is getting married or divorced this week, but what happens if we suddenly lose our pampered way of life? I suspect a lot of people won't make it, especially if there are no more GNC's around to sell iron and vitamin b12 supplements.

    Another good one. King Edward subjugated the Irish by crushing them under laws which limited their meat consumption so about all they ate was potatoes. Smart guy, until they got bombs and guns.
