Pain in foot

Ok so I have a wierd problem. Just last night, I started having this horrible pain on the outside edge of my left foot. It started when I was walking/climbing hills outside last night. It was just an ache, but by the time I got done, I could hardly put my foot down flat. It wasn't too bad if I walked on my tippy toes. It was not in the arch, top, etc, but completely on the side of my foot. It hurt all evening. Had on my New Balance tennis shoes that I always wear when walking.

When I woke up this morning, it seemed fine. I put on my dress shoes (heels) for work and went on my way. At lunch, I agian put on my tennis shoes and went walking and the pain returned. Quite painful, almost like a break in my foot, burning. As soon as I took of my tennis shoes and put my dress shoes back on, the pain is no longer there.

Any ideas what could be causing this? The shoes are probably 8 months old, never had issues before. I even used them to walk yesterday at lunch with no issues.

Thanks!!!

How long have you had your shoes? If you wear them consistently for exercise my doctor said you should replace them every 3 months.
Also, you can go to your New Balance store and they have inserts for support. The stores are very helpful and it could make a huge difference for you.
You said you were climbing hills? It could be related to how you "landed" with each step climbing the hill.
If you've lost weight (including in your feet) you may need to be resized.
I would start with the New Balance store and see if they can help you.

I had a similar pain but also had arch pain with it. I ended up tearing my plantar fascia ligament. I had to wear a boot for 8 weeks. That was awful. I had been wearing Nike which my doc informed me he HATES. He literally wrote me a script for inserts from New Balance. He also told me to make sure that when I buy new tennis shoes that the heel part has a flat surface or squared edges. The Nike shoes I was wearing at the time of my injury had an angled heel base. NOT GOOD!

My plantar fascia is currently giving me some trouble too but not to that extent! I hope yours is better :)

to answer the original poster, I know that there is a little bone on the outside of your foot that is cube shaped, and sometimes in sports injuries you see that little bone will get turned and start to hurt. Perhaps see a doctor, but I have know that to happen.

    Good luck!

Oh yes, I'm completely healed. It was quite the process tho!
Since then I have found that K-Swiss Tubes and Reebok Run Tone or Reelflex are the most comfortable for me.

I have only been exercising for about 3 months, so not sure if the shoes are worn out or not. I will try some different shoes/inserts first.

I have noticed though that since being back from walking at lunch and having my other shoes on, I am having a LITTLE bit of pain now w/o the New Balance shoes on. Hopefully it's just a shoe issue though.

    Thank you for the feedback!!!

You don't realize how important your shoes and your feet are until you have a painful injury. Don't ignore it! :)

That sounds a lot like the pain I was having while doing 30DS. Although, I was mostly doing it barefoot, but the one time I tried it with my New Balance shoes on, the pain was still there and seemed worse. Walking with my shoes on for more than 2 or 3 minutes killed my feet and it got so bad that the pain would go up the sides ankles and lower calf. I took it easy for a few days and now I no longer do the high impact jumping jacks, etc. on 30DS. I seem to be pretty much over it, but I still get occasional pains if I am walking or standing too long. I am convinced all of the jumping and impact is what hurt mine.
  • I would say that you either bruised that side of your foot a little bit or that your shoes need to be replaced with better support. Hope it gets better soon though!

Sounds like PF to me too. Can be anywhere around heel, inside, outside...hard to treat, been trying to deal with it for better part of a year. Might break down and do cortisone shot next week.

I had pain in my right side of my foot before and it ended up being a hairline fracture. Be careful and if it still hurts see a doctor!

You all are so smart :) Thanks for all the information. I'll keep an eye on it and hopefully it will go away on it's own!
