Hawaii? Where and When?
We have never been to Hawaii, but would like to go within about 2 years.
What time of year is best?
We love body surfing, where is that the best?
We love to hike, where is that the best?
We also like decent hotels that are either on or very near the beach, can you recommend any?
From what I have read, Oahu is a good overall choice. Do you agree?

My brother has been there several times, but I have not. One thing that I remember that he said to NOT waste your time doing was the "Drive of the Seven Pools", or a name similar to that. It took forever, and was unspectacular. He said it appeared to simply be a way to funnel tourists into an area that rarely got tourists, so that they could sell souvenirs, etc.
Otherwise, he RAVES about Hawaii, and has tried to get me to go for years. :-)0 -
"The Big Island", (Hawaii)! Any time of year is awesome as the temperature is always 78 to 82 degrees!!!!! Kona is awesome! You have to go see the volcanoe when you go!!!!! I went four times in under a year, each time to the same island!!!!!0

Edited to add, I went in Feb & the weather was perfect!0 -
Kaua'i is BEAUTIFUL!!! Wake up early to avoid the tourists. Went in Aug. and had a wonderful time. Food is expensive and locals aren't very open to tourists (go figure). The sights make up for that. It stays with you and becomes part of your being.0

I've been to Maui and loved it! We stayed at the Grand Wailea and it's right on the beach. Just Go With It starring Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston was filmed there, although we did not stay in rooms that were $12,000 a night! It's a Hilton property and we used points and stayed for free.
We didn't surf but we did lots of hiking, watched the sunrise from the top of a volcano and then biked down it, took a whale watching tour (only in the winter months - they leave by March) and drove the Road to Hana. We went to bed exhausted every night from so much exploring. I'm sure you'd be happy with any one of the islands. We went for a week and it really wasn't long enough to do everything we wanted. We didn't do the helicopter tour - my big regret. I'll just have to make another trip!0 -
Kauai is my favorite island and I've been to all of them. The Na'Pali coast is an amazing hike (all of it if you're in it for a serious backpacking trip or for just a hike, the first part to the waterfall). Kauai also has great beaches for surfing and body surfing and lots of things to do as far as hikes, canoeing, water sports, stuff to see etc..It's a much less toruisty place than Maui or Honolulu but not as remote as Lanai or Moloka'i.0
