I am on Day 4 of the Lean program and supposed to do the Yoga X tonight. I can not find that DVD (I think I gave it to my brother b/c I hate Yoga), so thinking of doing one of my Jillian DVD's and treadmill. Do you think this is an ok substitution? I have the 30 Day Shred, Maximum Full Frontal, Maximum Back, Cardio Kickboxing, and another one, but can't remember name!

depends on what your goal is. If your goal is a yoga type workout - then your exchanges are not the same. :) You would need to use a stretching, or yoga type thing as replacement.

But if your goal is just "any substitute", then you can add in cardio.

I personally never do the Yoga in P90X, hate it, not a Yoga fan, and feel, for my goals it is unneeded - so I always sub other cardio work. :) Ether DVD, or Treadclimber, or Body bag work etc.

The main thing is not to work the same muscle groups back to back - always skip a day between groups, for adequate recovery and repair.

I have done P90X 7 times complete (doubles and classic) , and completed P90X2. Never did yoga more then once or twice. :)

Thanks. I am not a yoga fan either. I did arms and shoulders last night, so will probably do one of my Jillian DVD's tonight and some cardio. That is great you did the P90X so many times!! That is amazing!

To EMPC....Congrats to you and your husband for your commitment to personal fitness!

P90X is an intense program. That said, it is something you CAN do. I'm just a bit younger than you and I too have done the program. Once complete and now doing a hybrid program with P90X and Insanity.

My suggestion to you is that early on, watch the DVD of a program in advance of trying to do it. When doing this pre-viewing, pay particular attention to the form and execution of the movement. Watch the other demonstrators in the video other than Tony Horton. Typically there is one demonstrator doing something a bit harder...and at least one of the demonstrators doing a slightly easier version. When you have watched the entire DVD as a pre-view, then you will be better prepared and familiar with doing the movements when you actually do the exercises.

Also (VERY IMPORTANT), modify the exercises as you need to do. NONE of us that started this program were able to keep up initially. I was 45-60 days into the program before I was able to keep pace with some of the DVDs without pausing or modifying the exercises. It is OK to modify and pause as needed.

If you have questions, ask them hear on MFP.

If you bought the P90X program direct from BeachBody, you will be hearing from a "BeachBody Coach". They too can help answer questions about the program. That's a good thing. The down side, my Coach was very interested in selling me the nutritional elements (recovery drink, shakes)....and I wasn't so keen on the pressure. Maybe my experience was unique....you may not have this same experience with your coach.

    Good luck!

eat enough calories, or you will find results are poor

eat enough protein and carbs Or you will have no energy, and limited muscle improvement, and less fat loss. 1 gram of protein per pound of LEAN body mass is a rough good guide. (or just a bit less then your goal weight, depending on body fat level you are aiming for)

Do the best YOU can do, modify modify modify - until you don't need to - its okay. :) Don't worry you are not as good as the DVD folks - None is at first, many still are not after completing a few complete 90 day rounds. Thats fine - you only compete with you.

Yes it is important to do all those darn pullups and pushups - even if you must modify. Do not skip them.

Lift heavy, low reps - you will get better results.

YES it really is important to write it all down, or you cannot see your improvement, and slack off to easy.

Take INCH measurements every 30 days from MANY body areas - I often loose inches before scale weight, (an not always all over) and if you look at scale only, you can get stressed.

IMO classic is the best plan, for best overall results - male or female. Doubles is next.

Lean is alot of work, but much less payoff to me. But that my opinion only, for those that do it, love it, and like the results - that terrific. But definitely swap up to classic when you can.

You can do the program without the recommended supplements, and without following the diet - and still have great results. Just monitor calories and make sure you have enough protein and carbs.

I do use protein shakes, and a pre and "inner" workout drink - but not P90x, And they are optional. Though for me, I cannot easily meet my protein needs with out supplementation, since I am a short stature women, with lower allowed calorie ranges then a man. But that may not apply to others.

As a coach, and someone who has done P90x -- Do a yoga type workout...

I know it's not FOR everyone... and not everyone LIKES it -- but it serves a purpose ... IT's helping to stretch you out and make you more limber so the exercises become easier...

    Just my 2 cents...
