does anyone do this? and is it an effective workout? im looking to up my fitness and tone up.

Depends on the type of kickboxing...I do one through a Martial Arts place - we use gloves to punch/kick the bag, partner work, toning work - lots of HIIT type exercises incorporated within the workouts...no two workouts are the same...some days it's not bad - other days I feel like laying down right there on the mats and never getting up...
Circut training can help tone...you may want to look into lifting heavier though - I know there are some people who can point you in the direction of a blog or book to help with actually lifting heavy (I do crossfit so I just do what my coach tells me to do)0
