Working out and getting bigger?

I used to run a lot, but cut back a few years ago and mainly was working out on the elliptical and practicing hot yoga. Now, I want and need to firm up and get rid of some fat that has settled on my thighs. But, whenever I ramp up my runs (generally 4-5 miles twice a week) and use my elliptical (all the other days), I get larger - not smaller! Right now my jeans are SO tight in the thighs...it's a really uncomfortable feeling. I do tend to put on muscle easily. I think I have gained probably 3 pounds since I've been working out more.

What should I do? Keep on with the cardio? I am also doing a Jillian Michael's DVD 2-3 times a week - No More Trouble Zones, which focuses on arms, legs, stomach.

I have my calories set to about 1100 each day. And, I do not consume grains - leans proteins, nuts, some dairy, veggies.

Am I not eating enough?

I highly encourage you to read this article that's available on MFP's forums:

    http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/3047-700-calories-a-day-and-not-losing

It will give you a good understanding of why under eating is bad, why you're not losing so much at the beginning of your diet, and a good overall view of how this site and many of its members have helped others go through weight loss.

But to answer your question, you may be eating too little in calories. Keep up with 1 lb/wk loss and get your calorie count as close as you possibly can to the number generated for you on your goal. Even with exercise, it's really important.

Keep up with the good food habits!

I assure you, you're not gaining muscle on 1,000 cals a day. Your body is worrying about far more important things at this point.
