Confused about calories

Hi
I just started a 1200 calorie diet and I must say I thinks it very doable to lose weight. I am also exercising and for the first time in my entire life joined a gym. I am just so exited about my new journey.
I am a bit confused. So say I burn 500 calories do I have to eat those 500 calories in order to lose weight? Do I just eat the 1200 calories? I've been sticking to 1200 and not eating more than that regardless of how much I've burn during my workout.
Thanks for your help.
