Ive been reading a lot lately about chocolate milk recovery and it sounds great. Does anyone know if this also applies to milk and chocolate milk mix (ie milk and nestle's quick) versus chocolate milk in a jug/box?

Thanks!

The REAL thing you need for the repair of your muscles is the milk. Chocolate milk is just an easy way to get that into you. It doesn't matter how you make it - sugar free nestle or buy it premade.

What you're looking for is a 4:1 of carbs to protein.

You can take the protein and multiply by 4. If that number is close to the carb amount, you're good to go.

Ovaltine is the best. It's got the vitamins and carbs and the milk brings the protein. Add two regular size Fig Newtons and you're good to go.

There is at least one good article on the chocolate milk thing at the runner's world web site.

Ahh, that makes sense! So really it could be anything as long as it has that ratio.

    Thanks so much everyone!

Milk and Nestle powder is better. I've read but have not verified that the premixed one has high frutose. You can use the syrup kind too but it has more sugar. The chocolate is there to add the carb ratio to get it to the 4:1 like ghanie said.

You can also use Nestle Strawberry too. It has the same amount of carb.

There are quite a few article and studies. One I thought was particular interesting was when the study compared chocolate milk vs Gatorade vs Endurox R4.

The result, chocolate milk and Gatorade performed about the same, but Endurox R4 was 50% less effective even though it had the same 4:1 carb to protein ratio at a higher concentration.
