Slow Churned

I'm a firm believer in the IIFYM concept and practicing moderation. Having said that, even when I'm on a tighter calorie restriction (right now I'm not, as I'm bulking) I like to enjoy ice cream.

While I COULD pull an Acg and fit Ben N Jerry's into the macros, I've found an ice cream that is both satisfying AND lower in calories, which allows me more room, so to speak.

Edy's Slow Churned is where it's at folks. Most flavors clock in at 100 to 120 kcals per half-cup.

Right now I'm having a good sized bowl (2 cups) of Triple Chocolate Peanut Butter Sundae. 100kcal/half cup.

If you love ice cream and don't want too big of a dent into your intake, this stuff comes highly recommended by me, a random internet person.

bump. I love ice cream. I just keep myself from looking because I'm not allowing myself to eat it. Thanks for this. I've also always wanted to try the whey protein ice creams. Have you ever had those??

I've had Arctic Zero, I'm not sure if that's whey based or not. I found Arctic to be pretty awful. It's obviously WAY low on calories, but to me, frozen home-made fluff tasted better than Arctic.

I have some slow churned caramel swirl in the freezer right now! I love having half a cup (63g measured on a food scale) with 14 g (1/2 a serving) of dry roasted peanuts. So yummy for about 200 cal!

    Macros?

Snookums, check my diary entry for today for an example of a 4-serving bowl.
EDIT: And I think that might be off by 40 kcals, MFP has it at 440 and I think it should be 400, I'll have to check the container.

The Breyers Smooth and Dreamy series is similar in calories and tastiness. And for those out West, Edy's is the same as Dreyer's. Dreyer's is the original name but changed to Edy's out East as to not be confused with Breyers.

    I dig slow churned. Having tried about most commercial ice creams, the best tasting lowish cal ice creams in no particular order;

    Slow churned

    Talenti

    Skinny Cow

    BnJ Froyo

    Haagen Dazs sorbet and froyo

I tried Artic Zero didn't like it at all. Also I've made homemade extra protein froyo that turned out half decent.

^ This one is new to me.

Skinny Cows is good as hell, but I haven't compared kcal to quantity for that brand. I recall enjoying it and also thinking I needed about 4 times as much.

Can be as pricey as BnJ and HD but tastes pretty awesome

I love that stuff too. They have this single-serving milkshake cup. I add some Almond-Vanilla milk and YUUUUUUUmmmmmmm!!! So good. I am still losing weight but I love my sweets so much. Edy's is one of the ways I can enjoy a decent size sweet without killing my day.

I must tell you though, eat it before 6pm because it has sugar in it. Don't want it to turn right to fat.

I was planning on eating one bite every 13 minutes to keep my metabolism going.

If you drink water with your ice cream, it doesn't count as water. The ice cream cancels it out.
  • If you look through my diary, you'll see a wide variety of different slow churned flavors. Right now, I'm actually eating the Target brand (market pantry). The peanut butter cup is fabulous, undecided on caramel cup (haven't got far enough in to the container to test the mix in ratio for real).

That stuff should be illegal! I've always loved Edy's, but Triple Chocolate Peanut Butter Sundae is divine sin in ice cream form.

That's why I drink diet pop with it. I'm gonna die.

It's higher cal than the edy's but I figure anything 140 cal/serving or below is fair game.

    ^ Yep, that's reasonable.

When Edy's comes out with their seasonals, make sure you check out the slow churned Pumpkin (not to be confused with the regular pumpkin which is also good). The SC Pumpkin is only 90kcal/half cup. Goes great on pumpkin-waffles!
  • I will definitely be looking for that in the fall! There's a slow churned samoas cookie one out right now...
