Okay, I need help!!! I just bought my very first Kettle bell yesterday a 10lb one. How do I log my exercise with it??

Also, has anyone used one and had positive effects from it??? I am kind of excited to try something new.

I've used them and really like them. I have a DVD that came with it and I've also gotten/used Amy Bentos Kettlebell workout from Netflix. I bought Paul Katimas (sp?) kettlebell workout. I like all of them. Amy's is for people who've used them before. Form is critical - wrong form can result in an injury.

  • I go to a local gym and do Kettlebell there, It is the perfect workout for combo of strength and cardio. I am sure there are youtube videos you could watch.

I log it as circuit training.

I use Jillian Michaels Shred it with Weights.

Its a great workout, has a tutorial for if you've never done it before, and is about 30 minutes long.

I love the core workout it gives along with some great hamstring work and its so easy! I always feel it the next day though. Whew!

ETA: I use a 15lb kettlebell and am thinking of moving to a 20lb one. Since its not really "lifting", 15lbs isn't much.

If you have a HRM, you can make your own title entry and log the calories burned. If you want a good MFP estimate, I log partial strength training and circuit training. I love kettle bells and have had great results using them.

I would suggest working with a trainer for a little bit just to get your form. Form is so critical, I cant stress it enough. I have been workign with a trainer once a month for the last couple of months just to get my form right. I think after a fwe more sessions I'll be ready to go on my own. I have a bad back and bad knees so I needed his expertise to ensure that I didnt pull anything or hurt myself.

Intense Kettlebell (why would you do any other kind) burns 20 calories a minute when using a Tabata cycle.

    I do
    4 cycles
20 seconds work, 10 seconds rest

That is 16 minutes and 320 calories burned.

I have been implementing kettlebells as a full body, circuit training 3 days a week for a few months now and have had great results. Here is a site that I have used to get started. A 10 pound bell is OK to start with while you gain the correct form.

I agree on having a trainer show you correct use so you don't hurt yourself. I went to a local gym that offered classes and signed up for their one week free trial. Sneaky, but effective.
  • I do a kettlebell class for an hour 2 times a week. This is really a full body workout if done right. Make sure your abs are tight when doing all the exercises and you will definitely tighten up in no time. You can go to youtube and watch videos on training, or google kettlebell poster if you aren't a video person.

    Good luck! Have fun!!

I use the 3lb and 5lb kettlebells that came with Kathy Smith's Kettlebell Solution workout DVD set. The workout is so fun! But I also use a HRM to track my calories burned during the workout. Some people use the "general circuit training" entry to log these types of workouts.

Google Lauren Brooks. She's a certified kettlebell instructor and a true inspiration. Her dvds are great too. Jillian Michaels is not who you want to emulate. Her form sucks and you could hurt yourself doing it her way.
