Ok, so I have been doing this since January. When I first started this journey I started my workouts by doing a dance around the livingroom routine......after 1 week of this I irritated my achiles tendon and had to take a break. Then I got my Gazelle, which was GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Then I thought hey I am gonna switch it up (after a month of the Gazelle) and I did Zumba.......hurt my lower back. 1 week off with painful back, thought maybe I just was not used to it. So I started doing Bob's boot camp, loved it.....but was sore.....I can handle that. But then I thought, hey lets switch it up.......walk in place and Bob one day, walk in place Zumba another day, walk in place and gazelle another day.

WELL..................................... I have not worked out since my walk in place Zumba Day and I am convinced that I cannot do it anymore. I feel as though I pull my hips and lower back out every time. And now today, I thought I was feeling better (6 days later no exercise :frown: ) and I was picking up laundry in the bedroom and when I bent over I felt a sharp pain in my lower back and now I am stuck on the couch in pain again.

I have gained 1 pound....the one I was so happy I lost last week..........................And now I can't workout this week either :( So I am now gonna be down for 2 weeks.....and I am supposed to be getting hitched in Vegas in 2 months and 2 weeks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have decided I am gonna stick with my Gazelle, forget trying to do new stuff right now. I am 229 pounds.....I need to get some more weight off of me before I try doing other stuff. My nutritionist/hypnotist recommended watching out for some things that require impact or twisting, that although I may be able to do them I am still carrying alot......argh

I am bumbed :ohwell:

OK, girl, you need to do some SERIOUS core work. Your abs are seriously understrength! People hurt their back because their ab muscles aren't doing what they need them to do and forcing those little muscles that connect to the spine to help out, those muscles don't like that stuff, and they pull your back out of alignment and HURT.

Start slow, and be careful, but you gotta do 2 or 3 days a week of core exercises. You'll be amazed how fast your back shapes up if you do your core work 3 times a week! But let the pain subside first, and seriously, take extra care to do the exercises correctly. You can google beginner core exercises and it will give you plenty of good ones to do.

I used to injure my backs or hips all the time... seemed like every time I turned around, my hip would go out.. literally. And that was BEFORE I started exercising! Working on your core really does help, and, start slower. I watched some on demand stuff and went, no freakin' way can I move in that way.

Try an aerobics class with a real instructor who can give you different moves so you don't hurt yourself... do yoga (beginner) every day... stretch 3x/day... strengthen your abs and lower back.

even if you were "skinny" you'd be hurtin' yourself because you (a) are not stretched out and (b) are weak in some areas and (c) could very well be moving wrong without knowing it. It's really got nuttin' to do with your weight. I weigh more than you and I can run now (treadmill) on a bad knee - because I've built up my muscles.

There are 3 things you need to do to lose weight. (1) burn more than you take in, eating healthy (2) cardio (3) weight/strength training to increase your metabolism and muscles so your body will use fat instead of muscle when it burns energy.

Don't do Zumba, most of those tv exercise routines, dance routines, etc. Do a Leslie Sansone walking video, do your core exercises, do your yoga, etc. Build up to those things.

Best thing to do is to baby that injury and even though it is sooooo frustrating to be injured you will thank yourself later for easing up to allow healing to finish.

You are doing great so far, don't let this keep you down.

Here's the catch to have a strong back you have to have strong abs but to have strong abs you have to have a strong back....hmmmm. So find yourself a CORE workout routine, a good starter is the balance ball, because it lends support.

Also there is yoga DVD you can get it at target, it is Yoga for back care by rodney yee (company is gaiam) it is great for getting your back stronger. I threw my back out twice in 6 months and was couch bound for at least a week and this dvd helped me a lot.

good luck, you'll get better :drinker:

Thank you all, great ideas.......I definitely agree I need to do some core work........what ya all are mentioning is VERY helpful. I will get on the core workouts as soon as I feel better. I have a pilates video that has a section for core strength.....

Thanks, can't imagine why I didn't think of it.

    Thanks again.

Pilates....I am so much more aware now of what muscles should be doing what, and I am much stronger in my core....but you need to start with very very beginners stuff, some pilates classes go very hard very quickly, and you don't want that, you want good technique so that you get stronger and whenyou do start to do other exercises you know how to use your body without hurting yourself.

it's true that you need to be careful with the yoga and pilates--go slow and build gradually.

i also do not have much core strength, especially my lower core. i tried p90x yesterday and it was sooo hard for me b/c my baseline isn't strong enuf. plus there were a lot of yoga moves that i'm not comfortable doing, they hurt my back. while i could try to just get stronger doing it, i'd rather do other things like Leslie Sansone or my ballet dvd to build up that strength. the pain isn't worth it to me.

so, i'm sorry you got hurt just trying to mix it up. rest yourself. and then start back slowly. remember, it's not a race to the finish line. you will achieve your goals. :flowerforyou:
