Hi Everyone,

I am a 35 yo male in Utah. I am a business professor and it has really begun to gnaw at me how fat I look like and how that puts me at odds with my students. I used to be a scratch golfer years ago and I would really love to hit the links a few times this year, but I get out of breath just getting dressed. My goal is to walk 18 holes, scoring no more than 80, by the end of July. I could really use encouragement and support in this as it is just my wife and I. She is trying to get pregnant right now so exercise for her is limited, but she is about 30 lbs overweight whereas I am about 100 lbs overweight.
I am a disabled vet so many exercises (running and squats) will not be easy for me. Walking, pushups, situps... these will be how I try to go from here. I also have a stationary bike at home that seems to be lonely and in need of my companionship.
I welcome friends who are on the same big journey as I am!!!

Swimming is great for almost everyone. Maybe the two of you could try it together. There are water aerobics classes and everyone has to start somewhere.

Good for you and your wife for taking control of your lives. You both can do this!

some of the people that i see my trainer work with that have knee issues do modified exercises... ie: burpees but instead of going to the ground, they use a weight bench.... when they do mountain climbers, they put their hands on a weight bench vs doing them off the floor. crunches aren't the best way to work your core... i would recommend planks... and/or planks on hands vs elbows & then reach out with alternating hands... focus more on some cardio vs strength in the beginning until you can altenrate cardio/strength exercises in the same workout. if you are 100lb overweight, i woudl guess that even alternating punches using a resistance band would burn a lot of calories for you. Good luck! when you can't do burpees, squats, etc b/c of knees, it definitely requires a twist on your workout :)

    Good luck!

Has your wife talked to a dr. about exercising? Most of the time there's absolutely no reason NOT to exercise while trying to conceive. Starting now - even if it's just walking - can make pregnancy a LOT easier.
  • Welcome!! Walking will be good for both you and your wife. Try to do 30 min and work up to 45min and an hour walk. Its great for you both. Tracking is key! Make small changes to you diet at first, that way you dont feel completely deprived and give up. You can ease your way into bigger changes down the line. Good luck to both! Feel free to add me if you'd like.
