Hey y'all...so, after watching "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead" I am very inspired and interested in juicing. I want to juice from an overall health perspective, not just weight loss. I am tired of all the prescription medications and aches and pains. Any advice? Good books? Websites? Support/motivation?

I use my blender and just make green smoothies... I think the extra fiber in veggies/fruits is beneficial.

    Here's my standard recipe:http://www.thehungrytuna.com/2011/11/nikkis-incredible-hulk-green-protein.html

Of course I add whatever I've got on hand that I think will be good too.
  • Thank you for the idea my hungry tuna! :)

There are a lot of opinions out there about juicing. My own personal opinion has me siding with the people who think you should probably keep the fiber/ pulp in there instead of removing it, so I am more of a green smoothie type, myself... although I have not made one for a while! HMMMMMM..... might be time!

If you are juicing I would try not to just focus on fruits though. You should be having some veggies in them too.

Carrots are great in smoothies, but put some greens in there as well. Mixed with the fruit most of the time the taste is hidden or at least lessened.

Adding things such as honey and lemon help as well. Maybe mint too.

Google has a world of recipes...I am sure you'll find some great ones.

I used to make myself a green smoothie every day. I am too lazy now.
My green smoothie consisted of parley, broccoli, spinach, cucumber and a random fruit :)

Appears there are a ton of people with Netflix on here.
Watched that documentary and it made me want to get the juicer out too.

We splurged on a Vitamix just so we could drink more vegetable juices without getting rid of all the good fiber. We have a green drink (or salad juice as I call it) almost every night with dinner that's mostly based on this recipe:
    http://www.doctoroz.com/videos/dr-ozs-green-drink

(for 2 people, we use half a cucumber, 3 stalks of celery, big handful of baby spinach, few sprigs of parsley, one green apple, half an avocado, chunk of ginger and turmeric root, tablespoon each of lemon and lime juice, and enough water to fill the blender plus some ice cubes. Yum!)

It did take some getting used to because it's not that sweet, although the apple helps. We could only get my father-in-law to drink it by omitting the parsley and adding green grapes, but it's a great way to get a lot of veggies in easily and once you're used to it, it's super refreshing and filling too!

I'm inclined to agree with you. What do you use then for equipment? Vitamix or just a good blender?

I juice every single morning. It has given me so much energy since I started. I usually do any combination with beets, grapefruit, apples, oranges, cucumbers, carrots and pineapple. Depending on what I am eating for dinner I will throw the pulp into casseroles, meatloafs, and spaghetti sauces. For myself, I haven't found a down side to it yet.

We've really gotten into juicing at our house. Only problem I've run into is my 2 year old isn't a huge fan of it

Juiced for a bit and had no feeling one way or another really. Did not feel any better, was already eating very healthy and exercising. Lots of added exercise cleaning the machine over and over again. Can be very pricey depending on what you juice. I have since purchased a very nice blender and can do anything I need in that with super easy cleanup and fast prep time. Plus, the blender can be used for multiple tasks. Not a fan of single use kitchen gadgets, I invest in the best I can. I suppose if you had daily access to cheap produce it is worth a shot. I just feel all that effort for nothing special or unique nutrition wise is tedious. By the way, the auger type juicers are leaps and bounds better than those centrifugal mesh strainer heat producing ones.

Thanks for the heads up. I've had a juicer for about a year and a half and have made apple and orange juice...uhhh, like three times. lol I LOVED IT. I've never considered juicing to replace meals or to get healthy. After watching the documentary I was completely inspired. I want to flush out all of the processed junk and all the toxins. I'm tired of all the little aches and pains and prescription medications. I'm not going to be doing just fruits, as I know that can be a little acidic. I bought just as much veggies...kale, whole leaf and steam spinach, carrots, celery, tomatoes, cucumbers, sweet potatoes, etc. I'm STOKED!

If you read the Gerson theory for treating cancer (I have a friend that is 10 years out from treating his own "incurable" cancer this way), it talks about juices, especially carrot and greens (which are great with apple and banana respectively) causing the body to get rid of toxins any way it can. If your urine and sweat and other means of eliminating toxins from the body can't keep up with the swift pace that your body is trying to flush them out, your liver has to work extra hard recycling toxin filled blood, and it will even come out through your skin...break outs, cold sores, ulcers. It is temporary, and once you're through it your better. It sucks, but it's a process. :)
I'd stick with it for awhile.

I am in UK and went on Gumtree and found someone who was moving to Canada, who had a bread maker, juicer and coffee maker - needless to say, I bought them all :o)

Regardless of methods used, ensure you are getting a balanced diet. Do NOT leave out protein as it is the building block of muscle. Your weight loss needs to be fat loss, not muscle loss.

Why not just eat the whole fruit? Honestly, juicing is NOTHING more than severe calorie restriction and of course you'll lose weight on it. But after a few days of it, you'll really miss solid food eating and that's when weight can go back up because you're actually eating calories again.
And don't buy into "detoxing". If you want to remove processed foods, then just stop eating them. You don't need to go through the "juicing" regimen to rid your body of the supposed toxins you've ingested. That's what you kidneys and liver are for.
While I can see how juicing can be "supplemented" into a lifestyle plan, using it as a "diet" plan will usually end in failure. Can it be done? Sure, but unless your life depended on it (like the documentary writer) chances are this will be another fad diet. And diets don't work.

  • I've never tried juicing. What about the calories? I know it's all natural and stuff, but if you are trying to lose weight, it seems like that would be a lot of calories. I always hear you should EAT your fruits & veg. A glass of fresh squeezed orange juice has way more calories than eating an orange.
But, I really have no experience/knowledge of the benefits of juicing, so don't yell at me.
