Measuring calories burned while walking??

I want to put in "walking" as an excercise, but when I go to plug it in it asks "How Long?" Does anyone know if that is meaured in minutes or hours? At first I thought hours since it measures in MPH, but when I put in "2" for two hours, it said I burned only 7 calories, I'm guessing it's minutes that I should plug in instead? Anyone know?? Thanks a bunch

Minutes, there are different speeds listed in the exercises. The faster you go, the more you burn.0

Hi, it's measured in minutes. Just be careful...b/c the calories burned is WAY OFF!!! It used to say I burned 300 calories, I bought a HRM and I learned I'm only burning 150! HTH!!0

You really need a HRM, no other way to know accurately.......0

I hear that all of the time on here but for walking I have found the opposite. For a 20min walk in my neighborhood MFP says 90 calories burned. My HRM says 150+. Must be because my neighborhood is all hills.0 -

I agree. All my cals burned #'s were much higher through MFP than my HRM.0 -
Of course, statistically per virtually all expert sources I've read, you will burn approximately 100 calories per mile, whether run, walk or jogged - based on 150-pound person. So, for example, if you walked 1 mile in 20 minutes you burned about 100 calories. Now, if you are more than 150 pounds, you need to adjust. I am 176 pounds currently, which puts me at 17% more than 150 so I take 1 mile x 117 to get that I burned 117 calories. 2 miles walked/run ,etc equals 2 x 117 = 234 calories, etc. That is pretty consistent until you are moving along at much faster paces (i.e. 8 minutes per mile, etc) at which point you burn slightly higher percentages.0

yeah, i was just trying to see an estimate of what it might be. thanks everyone0

I agree with those that say MFP seriously overinflates calories burned. I would get a HRM or take a percentage of MFP's number (50-75%) to make sure you're not overestimating your exercise calories.0
