Goblet squat a better alternative then a dumbbell squat??

I workout at home, so no squat rack and no room to put one anyway. I have been doing squats with dumbbells hanging at my sides, but I read that a goblet squat would be a better alternative? Anyone have any thoughts on that? Also, what would be a good alternative to step ups. For the life of me I just can't get the hang of these things. No matter what, I am always partially pushing off with my leg!!

I think goblet squats are a superior exercise to performing a dumbbell squat with your arms hanging at your side. You could try the Push-Press, where you hold dumbbells at your shoulders, squat, and then do a shoulder press at the top of the squat. If you feel like some variety, try a Bulgarian Split Squat. It requires some practice and balance, but it's a great exercise.
