Best curling iron to hold curls?
Totally silly to post this one a fitness webpage but i figured there was a forum here so i am going for it.
I have hair past my shoulders and I am looking for loose curls that HOLD. I was thinking Hot Tools 2" curling iron but ive been seeing reviews that it doesnt work that well.
I have fine, thick hair.
Does anyone use a curling iron they swear by? Brand and size?

I SWEAR by this curling iron! I even bought it for my best friend who's gone through countless irons and fell in love with this one. I had a conair straightener before and hated it, so I was reluctant to buy this one but the price (only $15.00 at my local ulta store) is what sold me. I use it all the time and adore it The only down side is that I have hair that reaches my butt so it takes a very long time to curl/wave/etc. my hair, but that's just me. As for holding curl, no other iron has actually kept the curl the way this one does for me. I make no promises it'll work wonders for you, too, but I am very confident in this product! Best of luck finding an iron that suits you
P.S. Hot tools is an amazing brand as well! I have the waver and love it very much!0 -
I have the HerStyler curling iron. It works sooooo amazingly. All i have to do is grab a chunk of my hair and wrap it around for a few seconds and i get curls that last alllll day lol.. It takes seriously like 10 minutes for me to curl my whole head. And i have really long hair!0

I just use a straightener to curl. In saying that, I've only done it by myself once before. The other two times were by friends :P
Straightener was used all three times.
Oh, also used paper to curl my hair once.. looked a bit like a perm :P0 -
So yes, this is pricey...but OH MY GOD DOES IT WORK! I tried and tried to make my hair hold curl with hairspray and other **** but it would only stay for a couple hours at the most. Then, this year, I found this beautiful piece of heaven at Sephora. I don't put any product in my hair and my curls last perfectly for over 12 hours!! It's the best thing that's ever come into my life!!

I am a cosmetologist, here's my two cents : First of all, you want to put some sort of product on the hair to protect it from the heat. You can find products that will protect and also provide hold....an example is Redken Hot Sets. I am sure you can find something comparable at a beauty supply store such as Sally's. You want to make sure you have a curling iron that you can adjust the temperature on. You can find them at a beauty supply store such as Sally's as well. I have a Hot Tools brand and it works great. Had it for years. You do not want the curling iron so hot that it burns your hair, but you do want it hot enough to heat the hair all the way through when it is wrapped around the iron. Take a section of hair no thicker than the thickness of the rod of the iron (might want to do a little less thick b/c your hair is long). Start at the root and run the iron from the root to the end. This heats up the strand of hair and preps it for curling. Then, wrap the hair around the rod and hold for 3-5 seconds. If you have the right product and a good curling iron, you shouldn't have any problem. Another thing to remember is when you finish with hairspray, a firm hold on fine hair often does less good than a medium hold. A hairspray that is too heavy and used on fine hair can weigh it down and the curl won't stay. Hope that helps.0

Awesome, thank you!0

Wow, such great advice, peeps! I really appreciate it! So, what do people think about the cone shaped (or regular shaped) irons that you wrap around and has no clip? I am seeing them everywhere0

I think that irons you wrap your hair around are AWESOME! Just make sure ya don't burn yourself0 -
Honestly, the best I've found are old school hot rollers. They are great.0

THE BEST and I mean THE BEST curling iron in the world is Sephoras Sultra Bombshell. Downfall? 130 dolllars.
But HOLY CRAPTASTIC CRAPPERS it works like an absolute champ. I get beautiful curls with NO need for hairspray.
They hold for 48 hours....
Clampless so no line bs and comes with heat resistant glove.
Check it out on youtube or other review websites.
Peice of magic.
I dropped cash for that and the sultra straightener as it is an amazing investment so well worth it as hair deserves the best. Lol0 -

We use Rusk at our salon. Heats up quick, has 4 different sizes to choose from. Id suggest the 1 1/4 inch. I'm a hairstylist.0

I agree. The Bombshell is the best curling iron on the market. If you are looking for a similar style with great results but not as much money try the Remington Ceramic Curling Wand. Does a fantastic job for the fraction of the price!0 -
a clamp-less curling iron. It takes practice though!! I have the Conair xl...not pricey and the curls last!!!

Best trick I've found is to let my hair air dry, then curl it.
I have medium/thick hair and find that I don't even need hairspray if I skip the blow dryer. It also helps to not comb out your hair as it dries, just run your fingers through. Helps to wrap it up into a bun (or braids) first too.
As for curling irons, I use my Remington flat iron.. works fine on medium/high settings since my hair is easy to curl when air dried.0 -
you can try rag curls. they might be a little tighter than what you're looking for, but they're super bouncy and fun! plus, you can always just comb them out to make them looser. and they last pretty much forever since your hair dries overnight in the rags.
plus, it's free. all you need is an old tee or a piece of cloth!0 -
Jumping in to say that this is an awesome topic. I have fine hair to my hips and have been looking for something that would hold a curl closer to my shoulders rather than from shoulder blades down. I may look into this Sephora wonder!0

The Karmin Clipless Curling Wand is amazing for long lasting curls and/or waves on all hair types. It has a tapered ceramic tourmaline barrel for healthier, safer styling and curls of all sizes. Comes with a 3 year warranty as well0
-
The best curling iron out there is definitively the karmin g3 clipless. It makes all types of curls, they hold on to your head all day long and they shine like the sun!0
-
I use two different tools, depending on my mood. Sometimes I use a regular ol' Chi straightener for loose, more casual curls. At other times, I use a clipless ceramic styling wand. I personally own a moderately cheap Revlon one that I purchased from Target; works wonderfully!0
