I just did upper body strength training on Friday and I'm sooooo sore.. it was my first time doing weights in ages. I am trying to do upper body 2 - 3 times a week.

I was told that you just need 48 hours in between to let the muscles rest... is it okay to do them tomorrow even though I'm still sore or should I wait for the soreness to go away?

I would prefer to do them even though I am still sore but just not sure if its safe.

Thanks!!

When you first start out it's a good idea to listen to your body. You can try to stretch and see how you feel then. I don't lift weights two days in a row. Rest is important.

You can speed up your recovery by feeding your muscles, ie; drink plenty of water and drink whey protien right after you workout.

Another thing you can try is upper body one day and abs/lower body the next workout.

squats are pretty important for strength and it's the largest muscle group for burning fat!

It has been 48 hours since the last time i did upper body .. just wondering if i should wait longer than the 48 hours since I'm still sore... thanks for the advice

I drink tons of water but haven't tried the whey protein

You should be fine with 2 to 3 days rest between muscle groups. Soreness is ok, but if it feels really weak or pain then it might indicate a problem. For the first week or two of a new workout there will be a good deal of soreness. Just work through it and you should be ok.

I am by no means an expert, but as someone who played sports in high school and has worked out her whole life, the best thing to do is stretch right after working out AND in the morning. You will be sore no matter what, but stretching will help and it will keep you from getting injuries as well :) Keep it up!

I think you'll be ok to lift again after 48 hours has passed. Give it a try, and if you can't do it, just do cardio instead until you feel better.

I also want to reiterate the protein thing. That has been the number one way for me to not feel sore the next two days. Whether you have some whey protein in a shake, or you eat a cow as a steak, you need to get some protein. Yum!
