I've chosen 12 and 24lbs as guide weights because that's the weight of my instruments in their case. Silly maybe, but I need a guide to focus me into reaching a specific goal. I struggle to carry the 24lb case the 350 metres to college, changing hands about 5 times along the way to stop it being painful.

I need to build up my strength and not sure when I can sign up for the gym, not sure if college is going to allow that because it's my final year and there are a ton of projects coming up. But I want to get started at home and was wondering if anyone had any ideas about how to get started? An MFP friend of mine posted 'you are your own gym' to me when asking about strength training and I must look at it properly now, but any advice is welcome right now. Thanks guys :)

One idea would be to train by walking with a heavy bag. Walk until failure x3, per hand, totalling 6 walks, with a 30-60sec rest in between.

I suggest filling a bag with books or other heavy items that can stand being dumped as opposed to your instruments. Make it heavier than your instruments are, you don't want to be walking all day.
