Want an opinion on weight training.

I did 2 rounds of P90x, halfway through 2nd round, and messed up my shoulder. So, I've not done weight training in since the end of Jan. I feel like I'm ready.
My plan is to hit it tonight, but real light. (Modified P90X, just the weigt training parts) Even though that's kind of a buzz kill, it's kind of a test too. I plan to workout 3 nights this week, and take all three pretty light and easy. Just to see how things shake out. But, go through all the motions, just don't push too hard. If it feels good, increase the intensity next week, but still stay on the light side until I'm sure that everything is OK.
Sound like a plan? Or what do you recommend? Tonight will be chest and back, so shoulder isn't involved except as secondary support.

How exactly did you hurt your shoulder? While doing P90X? If so, what happened? Too much weight? Too many reps? Or was it non-related to working out (car accident, etc)? You have clearance from your doctor? I'm a Beachbody Coach and I would definitely recommend taking it easy when going back in. What does your coach recommend, if you have one? If you were doing well before the injury, your body will remember and it will re-adjust when it's ready. You hear Tony say a lot "don't try to be a hero" and protect whatever injury you may have to work with and this is sound advice. Try switching to using bands instead of weights on the shoulder exercises if you don't want to you use lighter weights. Don't focus on speed but rather on form. Much success!0 -
No doctors, waste of time and money, IMO. I know it's hurt, and don't need anyone to tell me that.
No coach either. I'm self-motivated. I got P90X to save $$$$ fro the gym, so I do everything I can to keep it all very cheap. Any additional expenses have to be absolutely necessary.
I hurt it doing P90X. I think it was the Yoga. That stupid thing where you get on your back and put all your pressure on your neck. That's a stupid stupid move. I heard something snap and then I had shoulder pain. Because of the type of pain, more generalized than a specific spot, I think it might be spinal. Which, if it is, I may go see a Chiropracter and have it snapped back into position. I just haven't fully self-diagnosed the exact problem yet.
I gave my bands away because I never used them. When I got the DVD, I also bought bands and weights. I never used the bands, so I just gave them to a chick I was dating, who I'm not dating anymore. ...maybe I should ask for them back, tell her they were conditional. LOL.
I think this week might just be a trial week and I'll go really light just go through the motions and maintain form, and just see how things settle. If I get an increase in pain, then I'll go see a chiropracter first, and if that doesn't work, I'll visit my doctor. But, if all goes well, then, great.0 -

Uh, P90X is pretty intense. Yes, I've done weight training for years at a gym. I quit the gym and bought the P90X DVD's. Now, I want to convert my garage into a gym, but until I get the $$$$$ to do that, I'm stuck with P90X for now. I do have free weights, but just dumb bells.0 -
better see the chiro soon. I have to too for my left arm. I do free weights because my arms are different in what they can lift. go see the chiro before it gets worse! I better take my own advice.0

A snap isn't normal, a doctor (probably sports medicine) isn't a waste of money. A lot of times you'll end up hurting yourself more not getting something fixed. If its kept you out, you're injured, not hurt...there is a difference. Also, self diagnosing is just plain idiotic.0

Im studying Sport science, and can tell you now (and also from past experience with a shoulder injury)...it is worthwhile getting yourself a rehabilitation program, its better to have someone like a Biokineticist helping you out to help plot your progress. Its better to progressively increase the weight during training after an injury...but you have to start of with free weight training first before jumping into the deep end.0

That's what I was thinking that P90X may be too intense with a shoulder injury and if you could work with free weights you could regulate things better without hurting yourself further.0 -

It's great to be self motivated and you've proven to yourself that you can achieve your goals! However, with a coach to support you, you can make better decisions when injuries occur. I am also In the middle of a round of P90X so I understand the challenges of it. I would definitely recommend seeing a chiropractor immediately if it within your means to do so. Not only will he be able to re-align you but he can also guide you in proper technique to avoid re-injury. Yoga is only enjoyable and effective when executed properly. Perhaps there is a yoga studio local to you that could advise you (free or low cost) on your technique as well. Much success! :glasses:0 -

Good luck rehabbing an injury that you don't understand.
Hurting your shoulder, not seeing a doctor, then going back to weight training is a recipe for disaster.
At least take the time to diagnose the problem, figure out the neccessary rehab steps, then start lifting.
that being said, start lifting real weights instead of p90x.0
