Anyone else watch this show? I watched a marathon yesterday. People were eating things like nail polish, soil, gasoline, couch cushions, and even drinking their own urine! All I could think was - How would they log that into myfitnesspal?? How many calories is in urine? OMG!

That's what the lady said who drank her urine! She called it urine therapy, and it was apparently keeping her skin cancer in remission. She even bathed her eyeballs in it!

what about the one that was addicted to wearing huge animal costumes? CRAZY!!! haha! I love watching that show. Makes you feel like the most normal person in the world! There was another one with a guy that was addicted to pulling nasty gooey hair out of tub/shower drains and feeling it, stroking it, smelling it ... YUCK!

There shouldn't be that many calories in it, since it's just stuff your body didn't want. It already took all of the nutrition and calories. The urine drinking...that's making me nauseous, actually.
  • PICA. My 8 year old has it. It can be diet related or psychological. His is psychological. When it's psychological behavior modification is the only "treatment" at least that is what all the experts have told us. It's very disturbing and no joke, it can be really dangerous.

I have a friend that has PICA, hers is diet related... but I still think there is a psychological aspect behind it too. The first time I saw her eat dirt I looked at her like she lost her mind, and then she explained why at first I didn't believe her and just thought she was crazy, and then her mother explained it had been happening on and off since she was 4 or so. Turns out she was lacking a mineral or something that was found in the dirt (just regular ground dirt nothing you buy in the store.) But yes VERY dangerous, and completely not a joke at all.

However; the woman who drank her own urine did it for the fact that it is the "body's natural medicine" and she was convinced that it was keeping her skin cancer at bay. There is a thing called urine therapy - BUT there is nothing to medically support any claim you can come across.

Oh I'm not offended, it's human nature to make fun of or kill that which we don't understand. I blame the media - shows like this and hoarders - for the perceptions of the public. They turn very real illnesses into fodder for the masses. The main problem is they don't really explain these diseases, they just make them into nightly entertainment. It's all about ratings and ratings equal money. On the flip side, they do get people talking about it, and hopefully curious enough about it that they educate themselves on the diseases and MAYBE one day they will be able to really treat or prevent them.
