Temporary Weight Gain after 10K?

Hi all. I just ran my first ever 10K on Saturday. It was muddy, hilly and awesome. I was sort of shocked to see that I'm up almost 3 pounds now. I've read that this is a common thing when you've pushed yourself really hard. I worked out yesterday but took a MUCH needed rest day today. I'll be back in the gym tomorrow am for another run (probably shorter distance this time). Is it water gain or what? Anything special I should do besides not freak out and give my body a few days to adjust? Thanks all!

your muscles are probably just retaining water.. should go away after a few days.

If you don't usually work out that hard for that long, then it might just be that the "water weight" is due to your body healing and adjusting. Eat well, sleep well, and don't worry about the scale for a few days. Congrats on completing your first 10K!
  • Thanks all. I've run the 6.25 on the treadmill a few times and never had any issues with gain BUT I pushed myself pretty hard with the trail running on the 10k (heart rate monitor had me up in the 170s at one point and said I burned 700 plus calories) so I'm thinking I worked my body harder than average. I'll keep drinking my water and doing what I do. Maybe I'll ignore my scale for a few days.
