How do you go by weekly calories instead of daily?

Sometimes I am up on my calories, and sometimes below. I'd like to know on average what my calories per week should be and if i can measure it that way instead? I exercise 5 - 6 times per week, burning between 200 - 700 calories each time. My goal is set to 1,300 calories per day currently, in order to lose weight.

you should really just do the math yourself

Yeah it's not going to calculate it for you, the only thing you can do is multiply your daily intake that you're supposed to have by 7. Add the total amount of calories you would burn during the week from work outs. Then you can go from there. It's a lot less accurate that way though, and your body would benefit from a more steady intake of food.

You should really not post unless you have something useful to say

  • I have seen people on here mention that they go by their weekly instead of daily totals... just wondering how exactly they go about it?

I know on the app you can check your weekly calories but I'm not sure how to do it on the website. You can check nutrition over the last 7 days but it doesn't break it down the way the app does.

Yep, I go by weekly and I use the app to do it. It shows you your daily net calories and your average so far that week (M-Su week, you can't change it) as a bar graph. It also tells you how many weekly calories you have remaining. So if there are 3 days left in the week and you have 4500 calories remaining, that's 1500/day for the next three days. I wish there were an easier way to do it.
  • I just do the math myself
I add my deficits and subtract my overages (which are starting to get smaller) and re-assess every Sunday or every Friday or whatever

Yes I check on my phone, I don't eat my exercise calories during the week-days so I can have treats or eat out or whatever on the week-end, it works for me.

I use the iphone / ipad app, and that gives the weekly net, which I go by. It's odd that the web version doesn't do this. I would just do the average, perhaps keeping an excel spreadhseet, using the formula as someone suggested above.
  • Ahh brilliant, thanks for the app suggestion, i just downloaded it :flowerforyou:

^ This is what I do as well now. Though I lost my first 50 before MFP. I just took my TDEE times 7 subtracted 20% and aimed for that goal at the end of the week with that method I did not eat back exercise cals and kept a hand written journal. I fluctuated 200-300 cals a day nothing drastic just as long as it averaged out at end of week.

I log my food and exercise on MFP then transfer the details to a spreadsheet that I set up to monitor my weekly totals

This is what I do too, works great! I like to be able to see, at any given time, what my total deficit is for the week.

    1300 X 7 = 9100
  • Oh gosh maybe this wasn't such a good idea haha! The app shows I've been over on my calories since the start :noway:

That's why they don't do it, it's much harder to track, and you're going to wind up fluctuating your diet a lot on a day to day basis instead of your body getting used to a certain level of intake.

If you really need to fluctuate, what I would do is save up your exercise calories and use those when you want to eat a nice treat or something.

    Cheers.

Oh what a bummer! Don't beat yourself up over it though. Take this info, tweak what you've been doing and go forward. Nothing you can do about the past just the future :) Good luck!

Fluctuating daiily calories is actually a really good idea. Its a speific cycliing/ zig-zag technique that people use.

Now I understand that you prefer to trawl the forums for posts to pick on rather than share your knowledge and help people. Here's a tip ... don't like the post... don't comment, simple enough for you? PS your comment has been reported.
