An article in today's New York Times gives a sensible overview of calories.
"Calories Are Everywhere, Yet Hard to Track"

Among other quotes
“I recommend eating food. You have to pay attention to eating better and in moderation: plenty of fruits and vegetables, lean meats, and whole grains in reasonable portions, and not too much junk food.”

Overall, regulars here will recognize the advice in this column as very reasonable and middle of the road -- it confirms to me that we are on the right track.
