Protein shakes and lactose issues

I recently added protein shakes (soy) to my diet. I love the taste and ease BUT they only have 14g of protein per serving. I have found some other whey protein shakes that have just slightly more calories but 21g of protein.

The issue is, my body is NOT thrilled with lactose. Or I should say, certain lactose. I can digest cheese just fine (the harder the better) but NEVER drink milk or eat ice cream. Yogurt, cottage/ricotta cheese, cream I use sparingly because the issues are so-so.

Does whey protein mimic milk? Even in water? Or soy milk? (Which is what I use instead of cows milk.)

Thanks!

I also do a protein shake in the a.m as my early morning breakfast. I am too allergic to milk..have you tried using almond milk or rice milk? I discovered almond milk a few years ago for my son who is also allergic to milk..its flavored well and you can get it in orginial or vanilla flavored.

Whey protein is tricky. Some have lactose and some do not. If you don't like the lack of protein from plant based powders I would suggest a lactose removed why protein isolate. I use a brand called Bioplex Whey Protein Isolate Pure Vanilla Bean by Pure nutrition. It's 115Kcal/scoop with 26g protein. 0G fat, and 1G of sugar,

Basically the lactose is removed from the whey when they isolate the protein (since lactose is milk sugar) but you have to make sure the packaging says "lactose free" because not all isolates are created equal. Caseinate is also a lactose free protein derived from milk found in products like "Muscle Milk"

You could also try egg protein but I find its a bit higher in fat and has a weird texture.

**Please note this only works if you have lactose/dairy intolerance IE a digestive reaction to not being able to break down lactose or milk sugar (cramps, nausea, diarrhea, gas, vomiting ect ). If you have an anaphylactic reaction (rash, swelling of the eyes and throat, ect) You should skip all protein derived from dairy and go with a complete plant based protein like "Raw Protein" by garden of life or egg protein. Most people have just regular intolerance though so you should be safe with lactose free whey isolates.

  • I have a SERIOUS lactose issue, and I've found a great alternative (without any artifical sweeteners too!) .. It's called Plant Fusion and it comes in chocolate or vanilla (the flavors kinda taste the same in shakes to me...) You can get a container at a health food store (mine even sells test packets to try first!) and then you can mix it as follows ( a personal fav).

    1-1.5 scoops protein
1-1.25 cups almond milk (vanilla or chocolate or plain, any unsweetened)
    1 frozen banana

Blend, serve! It sometimes can be more like pudding, which hits the spot for me, so I usually make it thick. I love pretending it's dessert and I am a sucker for sweets. :D

I have the rash reaction to lactose and its a bummer. I"m trying spirutein right now, but I saw the egg protein at the store as well and maybe I will give that a try.

kaybelmore- thank you!! I was reading and reading and just couldn't find the information you provided. I'm ordering some today :)

I really like the soy milk- love the flavor and texture. And I even enjoy the protein mix I got (Body by Vi) but the mix is only 7g of protein. Hardly worth it. The mix you suggested is 26g -- perfect!
