We just found out last night that we are about 5 weeks pregnant... !! We miscarried last November with what would have been our first baby, so I am excited but very nervous to try this again. I want to make sure that I'm eating right, and wondered if anyone else out there has any advice on what to eat and not to eat... or just for support. I'd love to meet some new friends who are going thru this or who have been through it before!

Congrats!!! Have you spoken to your doctor yet? He/She should be the one to give you nutritional advice now that you are pregnant.

Eat healthy whole foods (fresh fruits and veggies, lean meats, whole grains, etc) are always the best option.

First of all congrats on your pregnancy! :)

I can't pinpoint on exactly what and what not to eat but Ive just had my daughter 3 weeks ago, I put on almost 50lbs! i'm suffering for it now lol. i'd just say definitely watch what you eat, make sure it's healthy, i'd leave out take-aways, just stock up on all the healthier things and plenty of it! also do light exercises :) it's amazing what difference that will make. x

I have my first appointment on Monday. I have an idea of what to eat and not eat based on the first pregnancy, even though it only went 8 1/2 weeks. I have heard to avoid tuna and deli meat (which have been go to foods for me!), and obviously I've cut out all caffeine. What's tough for me is that nothing sounds good while pregnant. I guess I just need to stock up on a lot of fruits and veggies so I have no choice but to go for the healthy stuff. :)

    Congratulations!

I would try to eat as clean as you can between now and when you can talk to your doctor. If you're feeling sick at all, eat what sounds good, to a certain extent.

I craved fruit and veggies with my first. I gained twenty pounds and she was nine pounds of it (granted I started out large already and didn't need to gain much). My second, I craved McDonalds, I gained 60 pounds and she was only 8 pounds 8 ozs. Point is, eat healthy whole foods and avoid overly processed and fast foods, even if you crave them (well, maybe once in awhile). Congratulations and I hope things go better this time for you!

You don't have to avoid tuna, just limit it to 2 to 6 oz. per week. Also you CAN eat deli meat, but it has to be heated until its piping hot. I'm 8 1/2 wks pregnant & just found this particular info out about 2 weeks ago from my nurse so that is why it is fresh in my mind. As far as the caffeine, you don't have to cut that out completely either, but no more than 200mg daily. =)

This site may be helpful. You can google "foods to avoid while pregnant" and come up with LOTS of sites. Also a pregnancy book such as What To Expect While Expecting has a whole section on foods to avoid and power foods to eat. Plus a section on how to plan a proper diet.

Like PP said....you CAN eat tuna and deli meats. Deli meats have to be heated till hot to kill the bacteria they may carry.

    Congrats on your pregnancy!
