I've been eating good this week, so I decided to go to one of my favorite spots for lunch. The place is called Eat At Joe's in Redondo Beach. I ordered "Tony's Salsa Burger", with fries and water. Here is the menu description:

Tony's Salsa Burger
Fresh chunky salsa, jack cheese, lettuce, spicy ranch dressing on a grilled bun.

They don't have their nutritional facts available, so I used my best guest for my food log:

Beef - Ground, patties, cooked, broiled, medium (hamburger), 1 unit, cooked (yield from 1 lb raw meat) = 883 Calories

Lettuce - Iceberg (includes crisphead types), raw, 1 cup shredded = 10 Calories

Kroger - Salsa - Thick & Chunky - Mild, 2 tbsp = 10 Calories

Kroger - Colby Jack Cheese - Deli Thin Sliced , 2 Slice = 160 Calories

Rolls - Hamburger or hotdog bun, plain, 1 oz = 79 Calories

Salad dressing - Ranch dressing, regular, 100 g = 484 Calories

Fast foods - Potato, french fried in vegetable oil, 1 large = 578 Calories

Total stats for my lunch:

2,204 Calories
93 Carbs
157 Fat
99 Protein

Does anybody see any glaring errors in my calculations? I mean, I know this isn't exact, but based on the menu description I'm probably pretty close.

If this is true, it one of the biggest eye openers I've had in a long time! :noway:

I'm not sure if that's true but I just looked up a Tuna Sub from Subway that I was thinking about getting on my way home today since I've been so good all week. Ummmm WAY more than I ever thought was in it and I thought it was not that bad!

Not that it makes much of a difference, but did you eat a 1 pound hamburger?

On top of that, my coupon wasn't valid. I should have just dug my head in the sand at lunchtime. LOL!

LOL! Good catch. No, I believe it was 1/4 lb. Let me see what kind of a change that makes.

Do you really think they used a whole pound of ground beef for the burger patty??? I've seen 1 lb patties before and they are bigger than a dinner plate. I think that may be over - would be 200 - 400 or so calories off if you sized that correctly. Also 100g is a lot of Ranch dressing - the average little plastic cup holds 2 tbsp - so I would double check that based on what you got - they couldn't put 100g of dressing on a burger unless it really was a 1 lb patty! Other than that - your calcs look appropriate.

I agree with the 1lb burger, so it may be a little lower than you think....

BUT - Salsa on a hamburger sounds really yummy, I may have to try that out!!! :flowerforyou:

Well, it would make a huge difference... a half pound burger (what most of the restaurants here serve) would be 440 calories vs the 883 calories....

But yeah, the rest of the stuff looks about right... I know I was shocked the first time I found out McD's french fries were 400+ calories for a small... I can imagine the amount on your plate... Way more than that.

    Thanks for the help:

I changed the hamburger to 1/4 lb, and cut the ranch in half to 50g.

The actual total stats were reduced to this:

    1,300 Calories
    89 Carbs
    85 Fat
    41 Protein

At least my heart stopped pumping as hard once I fixed a couple of things.

Yeah, Salsa on the burger was very good!

Next time I'll have the coleslaw instead of the fries.

    Thanks for the replies! :drinker:

Besides the whole 1lb of beef (there's the beef! ), I'd say that you underestimated the hamburger bun as it's probably more than 1oz and closer to 220ish calories.

    I hope it was delicious!

You're right. I only accounted for 1 bun, not 2, LOL! Well, hopefully on my journey I'll get a better sense of serving sizes and how many calories things are.

Well - other than the 1 lb burger... lol, let's see what else you could do to make it a healthier choice?

Ask for 1/2 the cheese, remove the top bun OR ask them to wrap it in lettuce and eat it without a bun at all, ask for Ranch on the side and measure out a serving or 1/2 serving, eat a salad instead of the fries. In all honesty though, I would eat the fries - but only 1/2 of them... that's just me.

It sounds like a great burger.

Hey - I noticed on their website that they offer their burgers as in a ground turkey option as well! That would help a lot!!! They also offer sweet potato fries - which a lot of people like - but I'm not crazy about...

Those are great suggestions, and I will keep them in mind next time.

I have two evils. One is regular soda, and the other is ranch. I'm starting to be good about just having water with my meals (and it saves $ when I eat out!). Ranch is a killer because I dip everything in it, but I never realized how many calories it has.

    Live and learn.

    Thanks, again!!

be careful - cole slaw could be as bad as the fried - there's so much mayo in it...

    Good call!

I've recently started using ground turkey instead of ground beef for things like meat sauce and tacos, and it really does taste similar to me.

Next time I'm at Joe's I'm going for the turkey option. I didn't even catch that on the menu, thank you!

Might I suggest Ranch Dressing from Walden Farms? Their dressings are calorie and sugar free and they are actually really good... we love the caesar dressing. Here's a link: http://www.edietshop.com/onlinestore/item.asp?ITEM_ID=404
