I've always thoughts Nerds were the ones who has social skills and it was the geeks who were basement dwellers.
Oh well, my username gives it away -- I'm a nerd. :P0 -
I am a BLERD.....(black nerd)0

i thought i had the definitions down but i keep getting argued with...
which is what? i feel the need to define myself.
Beats me. I like em both though. lol0 -
To me "geek" is a mainstream version. it is popular to be a geek. You can be a Firefly fan, Star Trek fan, collect Star Wars figures, etc and that makes you a geek. it's like having a "non-mainstream" niche.
To be a nerd would almost like being functionally autistic. They work better with their specialized field alone. They are socially awkward to an extreme. I have known true nerds. Fantastic people, but they make me sad. We'd be lost without them.
So that explains why the government labeled me as mentally handicapped. Oh well, back to my imaginary adventure of slaying dragons.0 -
I was a band geek. But I'm also kind of a nerd. Not socially awkward at all, but love things like grammar and politics for fun...0
-
based on this...geek0 -
It doesn't matter, they are both women, they should be making me a sandwich.
I almost spit up laughing so hard0 -
A nerd is someone super duper smart. A geek is a weirdo. I am both...0

These are slang terms, with inconsistent popular usage--so use whatever label you like. That said, according to Webster:
Nerd:
an unstylish, unattractive, or socially inept person; especially : one slavishly devoted to intellectual or academic pursuits.
Geek:
1 : a carnival performer often billed as a wild man whose act usually includes biting the head off a live chicken or snake
2 : a person often of an intellectual bent who is disliked
3 : an enthusiast or expert especially in a technological field or activity <computer geek>
I've claimed both, although I prefer geek. Now if I could only get people to stop telling me I'm not a geek.0 -
Also, this:
Giant because I'm 5'10"
Nerd because, according to this chart, that's where I belong.
Nothing wrong with that! I shift depending on my mood and the situation.
I don't think any of these is a negative thing, really. I like weirdos of all kinds.0 -
A geek is someone like me... Loves computers, technology.. Loves building computers, spends all my time playing console, pc games, or fiddling with some piece of technology or other.. Kind of repeating myself here...
A nerd is more of a boffin.. Very smart.. Normally scientifically.. ITs the whole sterio type of the thick rimmed glasses, brases, spits when they talk, mad scientist kind of thing..
..Very socially awkward.. Like a complete dork..0 -
OK.................... the geeks are designing the future as far as technology and science go. The nerds are playing WOW in their mother's basements. I'm a geek - PERIOD!0

So funny that anyone would be so passionate about the definition. It's inconsistent. Don't let yourself be defined and it won't matter so much!!!0 -

Would the nerds be playing SWTOR (Star Wars The Old Republic) in their mother's basements now?0 -
To be honest back in the day I believe . . .
A geek had all of the social awkwardness of a nerd but not nearly as much of the intelligence.
Nowadays, that is not the popular definition since being a geek has become a good thing since that time.
I think this definition is the clearest, but I see why it isn't as popular these days.0 -
From your profile you seem to be one tough *kitten* who can be anyone she wants to be and will kick anyone's *kitten* if they try to tell her differently. You tell us who you are.0

Shhhhh.... no one is supposed to know that.0 -
I think geek is better, but the terms have sort of lost their meanings, as people nowadays think that watching weird TV shows and playing video games makes them geeks or nerds. Sort of like 'lol', which used to mean laughing out loud; but nowadays is used as a punctuation mark.0

From the IT Crowd:
Interviewer: Oh no, I remember. You were going to tell me what IT means."
Jen: "I don't know what IT means, alright? I never thought to ask- it didn't really affect me as I'm too busy managing one man whose idea of an adult night out is Laserquest followed by pornography, and another who collects wires. Have you heard Guided by Voices? They're a band."
Interviewer: "No."
Jen: "I have. I've heard everything they've ever done. They're good. I'm a bit of a fan now."
Interviewer: "Isn't that a good thing?"
Jen (disgusted): "I shouldn't even know who they are! They've turned me into one of them. I am... one of them. That's why you need me. I am your conduit. I am your bridge. ICH BIN EIN NERD!"0 -

In my day, the nerds were playing Dungeons and Dragons with funny dice. The geeks were cutting school and getting into trouble and still getting good grades in school.
And I'm not saying which side of that fence I was on.0 -
In Australia, I reckon the answer is that they are the same thing! We dont really use the word Geek here at all, so maybe it depends on where you live as to what its called rather than what characteristics you have!!! Either way, they should be avoided.......unless they can be changed!! Any parent that lets their child grow up as a Nerd should be shot!0
-
I always call myself a nerd :glasses:0
-
Me and my friends like geek-tas-tic!!!:laugh:0
-
geeks are nerds with flair!
there are a bunch of us here:

I think the terms might have switched meanings somehow, sometime, somewhere. My parents tell me that being considered a nerd used to be bad, and being a geek was cool. Now, it's the other way around. Does anyone know how that happened?0
