im on the road quite a bit on the weekends and that means eating out :(

I have no choice I'm with others and lot
of time I dont get to choose where we eat.

lot of times I have to eat at places that have nothing online to show calories etc so its hard I know what are better food choices are but sometimes I dont have anything "better" to pick from on the menus at the places I have to eat

does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can eat within my limits when going to restaurants where I dont know the calorie intake?

This same scenario along with a complete lack of self control on the weekends is giving me a hell of a time.

I generally don't have much trouble on the weekends. I think it's because I sleep in! I usually get up around 10 am (my husband gets up with the 3 kids!) and then we'll have a larger mid-day meal. On Sundays, I cook egg pancakes with fruit topping and eat around 500 calories. Then I'm full for quite a while and find it easier to control the rest of the day.

guess I'm just gonna try to order the "healthiest" items and if there's nothing healthy I'm just gonna
eat half of whatever I order

Easier said than done tho LOL if its in front of me I'm probably gonna eat it

I always go for a long run on Saturday mornings, which gives me mostly free reign for the rest of the day.

Just like during the week, I try to get a good idea ahead of time what I'm going to eat. If I'm going to a restaurant, I'll know what I'm going to eat before I get there.
  • weekends are the WORST for me and I don't even have a valid excuse like you. Maybe you can find some of the restaurants in the "Eat This Not That" books if you just google them you can usually find their website and they let you rent books for free for I thiiink a monthish? or just flip through them at a library. They have a bunch of random restaurants. Also since you're on the road maybe pack some healthy snacks ahead of time like nuts, dried fruits or wheat thin stix (my new favorite snack) so that it will be easier to just order a salad when you go out to eat.
    good luck!! :)

I try to workout on a weekend where I know I'll be eating out in order to earn some calories.

Even if you don't have the nutritional guide, you can always try to make certain "better" choices:

Take home 1/2 - restaurant portions are typically out of control

Order sauces on the side, and request veggies be steamed and without butter (unless you need some fat that day, they say go easy on the butter)

Stick with lean proteins (grilled chicken, fish, or even some lean steaks) and veggies

If you get a carby side, just watch your portion (I use the palm of the hand rule)

Be careful on salads - plain salads with dressing on the side are ok, but sometimes salads loaded with cheese and bacon can be higher than a regular entree.

Know which tasty condiments are low on the calories (hot sauce, salsa, vinegar) and add flavor that way

Customize your order - if you're nice to the waiter, and tell him or her that you have health restrictions and want to customize your order, they're usually really easy going about it.

Bring some snacks with you. Low-salt jerkys, good protein bars, nuts - if you snack in a healthy way during the day, you'll be less hungry at dinner and it will be easy to order.

Consider ordering appetizers as an entree. Lots of places have steamed seafood appetizers, or smaller portions of things as appetizers. I frequently order an app and a side salad as a meal.

Get MFP mobile. You can look it up as you're ordering and log it. It will keep you in check.

I have a total problem with weekends too, but if I log, it's easier.
