Confused

Hi. I'm new at the whole counting calories thing, and I've run into a point that confuses me. The site tells me I should be eating 1200 calories a day, but I keep seeing people on the boards here talking about how that's not enough, and how they're "eating back" the calories they burned through exercise. Can someone clarify this for me? Am I doing it wrong, because before joining the site, I have been exercising regularly and, apparently (based on imputing my food from today, which isn't an odd day for me) eating the same amount of calories as the site suggests.
If I want to lose these last 20, what should I be doing?

I really don't like MFP's suggested daily it spits out at you. A better/alternate approach would be a trial and error via calculation of TDEE and utilizing a 200-500 deficit from that number.
