How do you deal with the overwhelming urge to pig out when you feel stressed? I have an essay due soon and it's my first big dose of stress since starting on MFP. I feel like I want to eat eat eat every time I start typing away at it..
Should I ignore the urges and stay strong or should I eat small snacks throughout the day that are healthy to manage it?

i am a big stress eater too. and like you i stress eat when i have work to do for school. :P
i definitely haven't totally cured myself but i'm getting better. what i do is make a big bag of light popcorn. it's 100 cals for the whole bag and then i can enjoy the feeling of stuffing my face for a long time with lots of salty food without feeling guilty.0 -
You can build up alot of tension in your jaw when you are stressed. The crunchy type of food like carrots help with that. May be jog around the block if the pressure is getting to you.
Good luck you can do this!!

Rather than fight the urge for snacking or eating when stressed I make sure to find healthy things to eat rather than rubbish - I might go over my calories but it is WAY better than what I would have done before.
Now, if I am craving something sweet I will blend up some frozen fruit - bananas, papaya, mango, whatever I have, which makes a nice big bowl of fruit sorbet. Or if I want something salty I will bake up a whole tray of kale chips (and probably eat the whole tray myself).
Sometimes you can't been the cravings, but just need to make better choices about how you satisfy them. That seems to work for me and also helps me develop better habits.0 -
Read a book by chris powell Choose to loose 7 day carb cycle diet solution , it makes sense and gives you the insight about an daily average person big consumtion of eating how to break out of the cycle.
Have any questions let me know?
Hope that helps.0 -
To answer your question...I didn't manage yet to stop eating even when I knew it's enough and that the food I eat it isn't healthy. That happens to me every week, I've manage to decrease eating as much sugar and chocolate food, but my appetite gets big as a mountain... sometimes I persuade myself that I don't need chocolatebar. From time to time it is helpful, but my bad habit has been stuck on me for more than 15 years (too many chocolate bars, ice-cream, lolipops) It gets hard for me not to eat biscuits or other things, when I or anyone else bakes anything at home. That's why I'm persuading and reminding myself that I will lose weight, as other people also did and I will workour regulary and that I am strong enough to manage it. and my other problem is dealing with portion sizes... Otherwise I managed to add exercising in my every day of the week, but my weight still jumps because of snacks and overeating
otherwise I started to snack fruits mixed togetther to drink, almonds, nuts, fruits, vegetables... And I'm still dealing to drink enough of water daily (it kinda makes u feel full), cause I don't enough.
So more important is your body, so try fill it only with "healthy" food (that is in my mind normal food in normal portions) And for stress is good to workout regulary, so you can release your stress out. Some advices also suggest to involve in yoga or meditation, listening to your breathing to relax,... It's good to choose the one or few things that u love to do. Dealing with your problems and believing in yourself that you can manage doing your goals are positive stimulators in your life.
It's good to persuade yourself out of overeating, but snacks can be also good, if healthy. So u can add them if they go in your normal calorie consumption based on... But as you wrote ur urge is because of stress, so releasing stress should be priority, not eating. So I suggest u try any of the things to lose stress first. It can be hard for some people to do it, but if others sucseeded then you also can and will.
I hope it aint too long to stop reading in between0 -
