Does anyone do this?

As in handweights not the type you strap around your wrists/ankles.

I've recently bought some 5lb weights and wondered if its worth taking them out with me when I go for a jog.. Any thoughts?

5lb is heavy for the hands, especially when jogging. They could hurt your lower back or shoulders by altering your running gait.

Despite warnings about using hand weights with cardio, remembering the Heavy Hands phenomenon of the 80s, I recently tried speed walking with some 3.5 lbers (I'm a big guy, usually shoulder press 120 lbs for 12 reps) and on a 1 hour walk I could feel my lower back and shoulders tweaking a bit. That said, it did raise my heart rate over the same speed and distance by over 10 beats per minute more than I get to without them, with a much bigger increase in heart rate when climbing hills. I won't be doing it again, however, as I don't think the benefits are worth the potential risks.

If you want to wear weights it may be better to have them so they are strapped to your torso - maybe a weight vest, weight belt, or even a back pack with a little weight in?

why are you wanting to do this?

hand weights/leg weights are stetchy as they change HOW you run and put you at risk for injury.
