I'm just curious what everyone uses and how expensive it is. In this week alone, my credit card has been automatically charged for 6months of anti-spyware ($29) & 1 year of anti-virus ($74) :noway:
I guess I signed up for free trials at the same time and now they are doing an automatic renewal. I'm trying to figure out if I should keep these or find something free or less expensive. Thoughts???

Speaking as someone that has saved/fixed hundreds of infected computers...

Use Microsoft Security Essentials. It's free, NOT bloatware, and pretty damn good.

For antispyware, I like both malwarebytes and superantispyware. Free version is fine. Run now and then if you feel suspicious.

Use a safe browser that sandboxes - Flash and Java have a history of security vulnerabilities. I personally like Chrome.

Personally I dont use ANY of the "pay for" virus protection .. Avast gives you the same protection for FREE.. it was tested against Norton and McAfee and performed just as well if not better... and did I mention it was free :-D

I can't add anything to this since I personally use the same...and trust me...I most likely go to more nefarious sites than you do. If you want to add another layer of security, use Chrome running AdBlock and NotScripts.

  • It isn't free, but Norton has done a good job on my PC.
