Unfortunately, they eat guinea pigs (cavies) in South America. I remember coming across this charity where you could provide a goat or a cow to a family in a third world country. One of the options was to provide a breeding pair of cavies so that the family could raise them for food.

I had a great guinea pig named Jake. He'd start squealing as soon as I walked in the door because he knew I would feed him.
