Small on Top, Larger on the Bottom

Ok, I was just reading a current top on girls/women who are 5'3". I saw a trend that, sigh, I thought was just me!

Anybody know why this is, that we (especially short women) end up losing all our weight in our top half and gaining muscle mass in our hips/legs?

I know I suffer from circulation issues, and I wonder if that makes me retain water, etc.... anyone else get checked out by their doctor because they were concerned?

  • I'm 5'9 and have a pear shape, its not just short girls, its genetics.

5'7 here and as pear shaped as it gets. I pad my top half with thick foam inserts for my bras and my bottom half as been padded with years of cookie, cake, and ice cream. I can't say that I hate my bottom half though...it can be frustrating, but it powers my long runs and thankfully being bootylicious is all good nowadays. OH yeah and genetics...my momma is one of the original bootylicious girls...BIG OLE BUTT!

5' 2" and pear shaped :( Trying hard to defy genetics!! I can buy L or XL tops but still need that darn "W" reference for pants. I'll be interested in reading this again when more people post :)

Unfortunately, I also think it's just genetics....I'm very small chested and even when I gain weight, I'm not one of those lucky ones that goes up a few bra sizes....my gut, butt and hips just expand : (

Exactly what she said. I'm also 5'9" and have a pear shape.

....but my waist-hip ration is well within the healthy range as is my weight & body fat%. Keep your eyes on the whole picture, not just the little things that you can't necessarily change :flowerforyou:

I'm the opposite. I'm 5'3" and lose weight faster on my legs and arms and slower on my belly.

It is all about your body shape, not you're height.

You are most likely a "pear."

Technically, I am an hourglass from my measurements but my body has the tendency to lose weight last on my midsection.

Consider yourself lucky. Big hips and butts are much better looking than a big belly! Not to mention, MUCH easier to hide and healthier because you don't hold your fat around your organs.

On a serious note, women tend to lose weight on top first and it does seem that its easier to build mass on the bottom half due to carrying the body weight during routine everyday activities and exercise.

Women tend to store more weight around that area. It has something to do with fat stores for if we are to carry a baby. pear shaped women carry healthier babies apparently?

im 5'7 and a complete pear shape. i always store fat and gain more muscle on my legs.

    lets embrase the curve! :D

^^ I agree completely with this. I actually lost it in my legs first since I started running and then did lifting to start my upper body. Now I am working on clean eating to help out my midsection?!

    ME TOO. My mom tried to tell me that she got her chest when she had me, but I've had two 9-lb. boys, and as soon as I was done breast-feeding, no more boobies. Oh well...there are such good padded bras now, I like that I can take mine on and off at will!! :}

    I'm 5' 8" and love my padded bras. ;)

I also carried twins to full term. So you might have something there. LOL!

lol...small chested too....also after brest-feeding, no more boobies... I'm pear shaped. When I lose weight it's always from the top first. Seems to take forever to lose the big butt and thighs

Yall do know that Sir Mix A Lot advises strongly against us losing our big ole bootays. I personally like doing squats and lunges to emphasize the derriere. ;) I wish there was an exercise to give me bigger boobs though.

ha! Same here, but just my hips and booty. I have a little waist and a B chest!

I hope thats true, as I am pregnant ;)

Also, it seems counter productive, but the more I do strength training the more slender my legs seem. Just from my vantage point though, or I just dislike them less because its more tone than jiggle? haha, either way I chant 'slender legs, toned butt' in my head as I am dreading a sumo squat or running up a hill ;)

Yup, my boobies went running for the hills when I was done breast-feeding : ( My only gripe about being small chested is that just a couple pounds gained or even bloating makes me preggo : (
