Hydration... how long?

So I've probably never really drank enough water and it's safe to say I'm dehydrated but like the kind where it's not affecting me just I know I should drink more (just going by some of the symptoms). Why? Because I don't like the taste of the clear stuff, I prefer Coke-Zero, Iced Tea, and Coffee but that's not my question. I've been drinking a lot of water the past few days and am running a half marathon on Sunday, part of the reason I'm trying to hydrate. In general, I want to change my ways and drink more of that tasteless clear stuff (mixed with MIO occassionally of course). But how many days until I actually am back in a normal hydrated state? I believe it takes the body's cells a little bit to learn absorbtion at the new level so how long before my body is happy and hydrated at the proper level? Another reason is to be hydrated for my race and not to have to stop during to run to the port-a-pot all because I am drinking more than my body can absorb!
I know I'm drinking enough to rehydrate at the moment so just wondering how long before my body can absorb it properly and maintain the level at the properly hydrated state.
