Question for women lifters

I've seen a lot of ladies on here talking about how great it is to lift weights.
I'd like to start working it in regularly to my workouts.
So I have a few questions.
1. What are the benefits to it? I'm pretty much just doing cardio at the moment.
2. Is this something I can do at home? I cannot afford the money or time for the gym - I have one son still at home with me. I have some dumbells and free-weights but not the long bar or bench either.
Thanks everyone :)

Check out progress pics of women who lift! They tend to look leaner even though their weight might be higher! It's because muscle is more compact then fat, so even though 5 pounds is 5 pounds, 5 pounds of muscle takes up less space than 5 pounds of fat! I personally have noticed a reduction in some areas of cellulite since I started lifting about 3 months ago. Sorry, not ready to post pics yet though...

That said, a short challenging weight workout like Jillian Michaels Shred it with Weights would probably be good for you to start with. There's a class I do at my gym called Body Pump which is really fun and I know that you can now buy a DVD version of it at home which comes with the weights you need. I know it is somewhere between $100 and $200, it is called Les Mills Pump. Ultimately lifting heavy will bring the best results and the only way to really do that is join a gym or buy a ton of weights to keep at home!
