Please read this article:

We hear differing stories from lots of different resources, so how do we know who actually has our best interests in mind? Personally, I don't care if I drink bottled or tap, bottled is always cold on a hot day when bought from a shop and I wouldn't drink from an unknown tap, unless it was a drinking fountain specific in a park or office, but at home, I always drink tap water (filtered because I live in a hard water area).

Most of that is stuff I've read before and seems reasonable. I drink a gallon a day but that's because I take creatine which draws fluid into muscle, without adequate water, dehydration could occur. Not sure about the bottled water is better than tap though, I guess it depends on the source. For instance, I know that my local grocery store sells their brand of "spring water" but a friend who works there told me that they fill the gallon jugs themselves in the store using a filtration system. In the states, I believe they have to list the water source on the label, or at least if it's not required , some do anyway and it's often times a municiple water source. I imagine it's imposible to tell who's right unless a water analysys is done. :0)

Who knows, I drink when I'm thirsty, which happens to require between 10 - 14 glasses a day for me (of water, that doesn't include any tea/coffe/juice I drink). I get crabby and a bad headache if I don't, but I know people who never seem to touch a glass of water. My grandad for instance has about 5 cups of tea a day and drinks nothing else (not sure that's healthy, but he's 86 so it must work for him!) and my hubby drinks about a litre a day, but never water, only various juices. So, I reckon just listen to your body and ignore the rest of the crap out there :)

And tap VS bottled, meh, sounds like bottled water companies put that one out ;) and water is not harmless? that made me lol - they don't mention HOW MUCH it would take to cause "water intoxication". That is just where you drink sooo much, sooo fast that you imbalance your elctrolytes! I notice they're very careful about making their wording so that they're not saying you'll die if you drink too much, but the way it is presented makes you think it. Obviously good at what they're being paid for eh.

"It's Not How Much You Drink, It's How Fast You Drink It!

The kidneys of a healthy adult can process fifteen liters of water a day! You are unlikely to suffer from water intoxication, even if you drink a lot of water, as long as you drink over time as opposed to intaking an enormous volume at one time. As a general guideline, most adults need about three quarts of fluid each day. Much of that water comes from food, so 8-12 eight ounce glasses a day is a common recommended intake. You may need more water if the weather is very warm or very dry, if you are exercising, or if you are taking certain medications. The bottom line is this: it's possible to drink too much water, but unless you are running a marathon or an infant, water intoxication is a very uncommon condition"

    What a load of bumpf.

From a scientists point of view, the article is pretty poor. Poor references from unreferenced sources (which have been taken out of their original context and fitted into the most convienient place in the article) and no "actual" information. Go with what you think is best imo :)
