So how do I search for USDA foods on MFP database? Honestly, I have trouble finding food items on the database. Everyone says it's a great database but I don't find it easy to work with. There are so many entries. Why can't I just find "regular" items. Say if I'm looking for beef stew meat I get all these other search results that look like recipes. I simply want beef stew meat nutrition facts. There are numerous entries and I have no idea how to sort through all of it quickly for the most accurate nutrition information. I wish there was a way to sort for results that is only from the USDA for example ...not recipes or products....just a generic entry for foods. Please help. Am I missing any tips to do this better?

I tend to include terms like "generic" or "raw" when I'm searching for foods. For example, lean stew beef, raw. I also search by store brand a lot, that seems to weed out some of the recipe-type results.

Yes, this ^^ helps. Also "cooked", if you are eating a veggie cooked. But even so, when I put in "onions cooked" the first thing that comes up is onion flavored potato chips. :ohwell:

I wish people couldn't/didn't save their recipes as public, or there was a separate database search for those.
